Bessie was married on her nephew Sydney's 5th birthday.  I wonder if he was the ring bearer?  Did immigrant Jews in the United States have ring bearers at their weddings in the early 20th century?

Sydney Brainin, son of Max Joseph Brainin and Nellie Doctor, was born September 14, 1909 in Manhattan, New York County, New York.  He is my 1st cousin 2x removed on my Brainin line.

Doris Lavon Benward was born September 14, 1920 in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana.  She was married to Charles Clayton Gaunt, son of Edward Lee Gaunt and Ethyl Fay Davison, who is my 5th cousin once removed via the Gaunts.

Hazel Dubek was born September 14, 1947 in Grandview, Manitoba, Canada.  She was married to John Kushner, son of Myrim Kushner and Chaye Golubchik, who is my 3rd cousin once removed on my Meckler line via the Golubchiks.

Beth Fawn Goldwyn was born September 14, 1957 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee.  She was married to Albert Lynn Lore, son of Frank Everett Eckman and Dorothy Mae Sellers, who is my half 1st cousin via the Sellerses.

Lawrence Matthew Gordon was born September 14, 1962.  He is my 2nd cousin once removed.

Samuel Zev Kardash was born Septemer 14, 1980.  He is my 3rd cousin.

Yael Kamil was born September 14, 1990.  He is also my 3rd cousin.

Tanner Derek Campbell was born September 14, 1995.  He is my 2nd cousin 2x removed.

Marriages

Isaac Pollack and Bessie Brainin, daughter of Morris Brainin and Rose Dorothy Jaffe, were married September 14, 1914 in Manhattan, New York County, New York.  Bessie is my great-grandaunt.

George Constantine Colby and Michele Catherine Bowen were married September 14, 1997 in Mineola, Nassau County, New York.  Michele is the 2nd cousin of my half-sister Laura Sellers on her Bowen line.

Deaths

Cornelius Elmer Sellers died September 14, 1918 in Mount Holly, Burlington County, New Jersey at the age of 43.  He was the adoptive father of my paternal grandfather, Bertram Lynn Sellers, Sr.

Rheena M. Hertzel died September 14, 1991 in Hamilton County, Ohio at the age of 84.  She was the wife of Orville James Gage, son of James W. Gage and Mary Rosella Hutson, who is my 5th cousin 2x removed on my Gauntt line via the Hutsons.

James Edward Rutledge was born September 13, 1921 in Oklahoma.  He was married to Juanita Fern Slentz, daughter of Andrew Earl Slentz and Bessie Florence Landis, who is my 5th cousin once removed on my Gauntt line through the Slentzes.

Claudia Joan Vaughn, daughter of John Glendon Vaughn and Relda Euretta Curry, was born September 13, 1937 in Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California.  She is my 5th cousin once removed on my Gauntt line through the Vaughns.

Ben Baylin was born September 13, 1947 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.  He was married to Debbie Kardish, daughter of Itzak Kardish and Shirley Bordelay, who is my 2nd cousin once removed on my Gorodetsky line through the Kardishes.

Doris Elaine Yandell, daughter of Arnold Lorn Yandell and Myrtle Augusta Higgins, was born September 13, 1954 in Yuba County, California.  She is my 6th cousin on my Gauntt line via the Higginses.

Joseph L. Gauntt, son of Reuben Lewallen Gauntt and Rhoda Ewing, and Rebecca Elizabeth Coverly were married September 13, 1902 in Camden County, New Jersey.  Joseph is my 3rd cousin 2x removed on my Gauntt line.

David P. McElwee and Mary Virginia Gaunt, daughter of Hananiah Selah Gaunt and Margaret S. Scott, were married September 13, 1913 in Mount Holly, Burlington County, New Jersey.  Mary is my 1st cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

James Robert Gaunt, son of William Alvin and Mamie B. Mitchell, and Alice Adelia Tully were married September 13, 1952 in Monterey County, California.  James is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

David Whitman Addis, son of Robert Trenary Addis and Virginia Claire Votaw, and Rebecca Lore Lieser were married September 13, 1980 in Richmond, Virginia.  David is my 6th cousin on my Gauntt line via the Votaws.

Elizabeth Githens appears to have been one of those traditional daughters who stays unmarried and takes care of her parents as they become older.  She died only five years after her mother did.

Virginia Theresa Gantt, daughter of Carl Thomas Gantt and Mabelle Yost, was born September 12, 1919 in Bradshaw, York County, Nebraska.  She is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gantts.

Herman David Jacobs was born September 12, 1981 in Grant County, Indiana.  He was married to Marjorie Louise Clark, daughter of Oliver Franklin Clark and Mildred Blanche Benson, who is my 5th cousin once removed on my Gauntt line through the Clarks.

Virginia Ann Bennett was born September 12, 1942 in Mount Holly, Burlington County, New Jersey.  She was married to Richard Bruce Sellers, Sr., son of George Moore Sellers and Bertha Poinsett Eckman, who is my half 1st cousin once removed on my Sellers line.

Michael Allen, son of Thomas Gerald Allen and Doris Filer, was born September 12, 1961.  He is my 5th cousin once removed on my Gauntt line through the Allens.

Bonnie Jean Gaynor, daughter of James Owen Gaynor, Jr. and Ruth Heard Hunt, was born September 12, 1961 in Sparta, Essex County, New Jersey.  She is the 2nd cousin of my half-sister Laura Sellers on her Gaynor line.

Machelle Renee Gaunt was born Septemer 12, 1962.  She is my 6th cousin.

Jeffrey S. Gauntt was born September 12, 1969.  He is my half 4th cousin.

Wanda Jean Hudson was born September 12, 1970.  She is my 5th cousin once removed.

Ryan Morris Kardish was born September 12, 1990.  He is my 3rd cousin.

Eugene Washington McStroul, son of Leo Martin McStroul and Anna Krebs, and Shirley N. Mislove were married September 12, 1936 in Waukegan, Lake County, Illinois.  Eugene is the father of my aunt Mary McStroul.

David Lieff, son of Sam Lieff and Libby Kardish, and Zena Koffman were married September 12, 1971 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.  David is my 2nd cousin once removed on my Gorodetsky line via the Kardishes.

Death

Elizabeth Evans Githens, daughter of Thomas Githens and Mary Gaunt, died September 12, 1886 in Atlantic City, Atlantic County, New Jersey at the age of 53.  She is my 2nd cousin 4x removed via the Gaunts.

This is my shortest list of family events so far:  five items, and they are all from the Gaunt family.  I was told that I might have lost family members who were first responders in New York City in 2001, but that was not confirmed.

Charles Louis Cook was born Septemer 11, 1964.  He is my 5th cousin 2x removed.

Meribeth Moran was born September 11, 1978.  She is also my 5th cousin 2x removed.

Marriage

Joseph Willet Votaw, son of Daniel W. Votaw and Louisa Gaunt, and Florence E. Barnett were married September 11, 1901 in Wabash County, Indiana.  Joseph is my 3rd cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

Deaths

Virginia Franklin Gaunt, daughter of Benjamin Franklin Gaunt and Elizabeth K. Frazer, died September 11, 1858 in Burlington County, New Jersey at the age of 14 months.  She is my 2nd cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

Anna Gaunt, daughter of Jacob Gaunt and Hannah Holmes, died September 11, 1879 in Pennville, Jay County, Indiana at the age of 71.  She is my 1st cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun: 20 Years Ago

The topic for today's Saturday Night Genealogy Fun was somewhat expected.

(1) Today is September 11, and the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attack on the United States.  Where were you, what were you doing, and how did it affect you?

On September 11, 2001, I was working for the Seismological Society of America in El Cerrito, California, Pacific time zone.  I usually went in early, around 7:00 or 7:30 a.m.  I did not hear anything about the attacks until I was already at work, because I didn't turn on a TV in the morning.

I don't really remember, but I don't recall that anyone else who came in to the office that day (a small staff of four people, including me) knew either when they arrived.  Apparently we were a rather insular bunch.

Sometime during the morning we found out.  I think that someone outside the office told me, and I told the others.  We didn't have a TV in the office, but we were able to watch some news videos on the computers.

We didn't talk about it very much, and I don't remember us leaving the office early.  Like I said, we were rather insular.

I lived by myself, so when I got home after work I had no one to talk to other than my pets, who never were big on conversation.  I turned on the television for company.  I had seen the CNN footage several times already, so I tried to find something else to watch, even if just for a new take on the attacks.  I went through the entire line-up of channels I had available, probably 40 or 50 at the time.  Every network but two was replaying the same CNN footage.  The only two that were not were Food Network and Comedy Central.  Food Network, which is based in New York City, had posted a static slide expressing sympathy for everyone who had suffered a loss.

Comedy Central was the only network that was airing programming unrelated to the attacks.  I watched The Daily Show with Jon Stewart for the first and last time in my life.  The guests that day were John Linnell and John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants.  I watched not only because there was nothing else on but because I have actually seen them perform several times and have met them.  I learned that they have been friends with Stewart for a long time and that they apparently know each other from New Jersey (along with a friend of mine, who used to be one of the band's managers).  Or something similar to that.  I'm a little fuzzy on the details.

Somehow, on a very surreal day, it seems appropriate that I watched two guys known for their surreal lyrics and absurdist take on music.

Addendum:

People rarely write, or are asked to write, about what happened in the days following the attacks.  I remember that my brother and several of his work colleagues were in Los Angeles for a conference.  They all lived in the Washington, D.C. area.  Air travel was cancelled indefinitely, so they were told to keep themselves amused in Southern Califorina.  They went one day to Disneyland and commented that they had never seen it so empty; they were able to ride all the rides they wanted to multiple times.  As fun as that was, however, they became bored quickly and decided if they couldn't fly home, they would drive.  They found a rental car and made it across the country in an extremely short time.  I think my estimate was something like an average of around 75–80 mph for the trip.  My brother said he could neither confirm nor deny the results of my mathematical skills but did concede that they had been trading off driving shifts so as not to need to book any hotel rooms on the way back.

Irene M. Gaunt, daughter of Robert Barclay Gaunt and Harriet Prickett, was born September 10, 1872 in Pennsylvania, possibly in Philadelphia.  She is my 4th cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

Reuben Lewallen Gaunt, Jr., son of Reuben Lewallen Gaunt and Lucy Bounds, was born September 10, 1877 in New Jersey, probably in Burlington County.  He is my 3rd cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

Florence Idabell Votaw, daughter of Millard F. Votaw and Ida May Fisher, was born September 10, 1918 in Indiana, probably in Wabash County.  She is my 4th cousin 2x removed on my Gauntt line through the Votaws.

George Weldon Walker, Jr., son of George Weldon Walker and Mildred Taylor, was born September 10, 1943, possibly in Mount Holly, Burlington County, New Jersey.  He is my 4th cousin once removed on my Gauntt line via the Taylors.

David Kardish, son of Samuel Kardish and Tillie Steinberg, was born September 10, 1949 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.  He is my 2nd cousin once removed on my Gorodetsky line through the Kardishes.

Ralph Marion Harvey was born September 10, 1968.  He is my 2nd cousin.

Sasha Kardish was born September 10, 1980.  He is my 3rd cousin.

Stacy Carrigan Gaunt, son of Benjamin Gaunt and Mary Elizabeth Sever, and Gertrude L. Ford were married September 10, 1907, possibly in New Jersey.  Stacy is my 2nd cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

James Marshall Allen, son of Clarence Allen and Agnes Viola Ledger, and Eileen Catherine Dallas were married September 10, 1959, possibly in New Jersey.  James is my 5th cousin on my Gauntt line through the Allens.

Deaths

Charles Norman Easlick, son of Allen Severs Easlick and Mary E. Shemeley, died September 10, 1917 in Burlington County, New Jersey at the age of 18.  He is my 3rd cousin once removed on my Gauntt line through the Easlicks.

Mary Emma Richardson died September 10, 1986 in Burlington County, New Jersey at the age of 85.  She was the wife of Frederick Cleworth Dunstan, son of Frederick Dunstan and Mary Waltz Horner, who is my 1st cousin 2x removed on my Dunstan line.

Helen Opal Abbott died September 10, 2000 in Shawnee Mission, Johnson County, Kansas at the age of 88.  She was the wife of Gilbert Lewis Clark, son of Oren Wilson Clark and Anna G. Gaunt, who is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

Minnie Caroline Slentz, daughter of James Edward Slentz and Caroline Ella Estella Oler, died September 10, 2002, possibly in Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Michigan, at the age of 94.  She is my 5th cousin once removed on my Gauntt line through the Slentzes.

Richard Charles Wright was born September 9, 1955 in Indiana.  He is/was married to Deborah Clark, daughter of Charles Robert Clark and Dorthea Virginia Lynch, who is my 5th cousin once remoed on my Gauntt line through the Clarks.

William Elmer Archer III was born September 9, 1968.  He is my 5th cousin 2x removed.

Edmund Hoffman died September 9, 1894 in Camden County, New Jersey at the age of 68.  He was the husband of Mary Gaunt, daughter of David Gaunt and Pamela Plummer, who is my 2nd cousin 4x removed via the Gaunts.

Susan Davis Thackeray, daughter of Ezra Thackeray and Phoebe Cramer, died September 9, 1909 in Ripley County, Indiana at the age of 78.  She is my 3rd cousin 4x removed on my Gauntt line through the Thackerays.

Eliezer Louis Garfinkel, son of Yikusee'ael Koifman Gorfinkel and Sora Rivka Mekler, died September 9, 1960 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.  He is my 2nd cousin 2x removed via the Meklers and the uncle of my dear cousin Esther Weinstein.

Robert Gaunt, son of Walter Clayton Gaunt and Lulu May Sherman, was born September 8, 1923 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana.  He is my 5th cousin once removed via the Gaunts.

William F. O'Neill was also born September 8, 1923, possibly in West Virginia.  He was the husband of Lois Adele Weaver, daughter of James Henry Weaver and Ada Adelle Allen, who is my 5th cousin on my Gauntt line via the Allens.
