Saturday Night Genealogy Fun: Genealogy Potluck Again!

Randy Seaver is having a stressful time in his life at the moment, so he has made the theme open again this week for Saturday Night Genealogy Fun and sent us out on our own.

Well, I certainly had fun, but it was hard to keep up, and it took a lot longer than just one hour.

This past Wednesday I posted a photo on my blog for Wordless Wednesday:

I then shared the link to my blog post on my Facebook page, as I routinely do.

But this week was different, because the photo generated a thread with more than 200 comments (the last time I counted) among my group of cousins!  The conversation went steadily from Wednesday to this morning.

When we finally had discussed this photo to death (well, we're not entirely finished), some people posted other photos with related people, and then we commented up, down, and sideways on them.  And those discussions helped revise our opinions about this photo.

And among all those comments were so many genealogical tidbits!  Names, dates, family stories.  Every time a new comment went up, I had to chase it down to make sure I didn't miss gleaning new pieces of information.  (Which makes the fact that Facebook is doing a very poor job of sending out notifications when messages have been posted extremely annoying at the moment.)  So I've been compiling all these little factoids and cross-referencing them to make sure the info is as consistent as possible.  I've spent more like four hours just today on it.

And these were very helpful discussions.  The one focused on this photo, for example, entirely changed our hypothesis of who is in the photo.  We started out thinking the women were the four sisters of the family who had emigrated from Europe.  By the time discussion had slowed down, we had come to the conclusion that theory was completely wrong.  We're not sure, but currently we're leaning to the four being the last sister who did emigrate along with the three who did not.  This may have been their last photo together before one of them left.

Events in My Family Tree: July 12

It's interesting when you notice what things happened on the same day.  Two of my cousins, on unrelated lines, were born the same day.  One cousin was getting married while another passed away the same day, both in Burlington County (and they're actually 2nd cousins once removed themselves).

Births

Roy Birnboim, son of Menashe Birnboim and Sophie Garfinkel, was born July 12, 1937 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.  He is my 3rd cousin once removed on my Meckler line through the Garfinkels.

James David Gauntt, son of Thomas Franklin Gauntt and Anna Marie Stayton, was born July 12, 1942 in New Jersey, probably in Burlington County.  He is my 1st cousin once removed on my Gauntt line.

Leonard Isaac Leven, son of David Leven and Esther Garfinkel, was born July 12, 1951 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.  He is my 3rd cousin once removed on my Meckler line through the Garfinkels, just like Ray Birnboim (above).

James D. Wickham, Sr., son of Robert Edward Wickham and Patricia Hehir, was born July 12, 1958, probably in New Jersey.  He is the 3rd cousin of my half-sister Laura Sellers on her Bowen line through the Wickhams.

Twins Douglas Jay Cook and Theodore Ray Cook were born July 12, 1967.  They are my 5th cousins 2x removed.

Julia Claire Kushner was born July 12, 1983.  She is my 4th cousin once removed.

Benjamin Scott Parker was also born July 12, 1983, but he is my 5th cousin 2x removed.

Morgan Ryan Fiks was born July 12, 1984.  He is my 4th cousin once removed.

Marriages

Thomas Franklin Gauntt, son of Thomas Kirkland Gauntt and Jane Dunstan, and Anna Marie Stayton were married July 12, 1935 in New Jersey, probably Burlington County.  Thomas is my granduncle, and his son James (above) was born on his seventh wedding anniversary.

Daniel Ryan Wright and Megan Elizabeth Ranck were married July 12, 2003.  Daniel is my 6th cousin.

Deaths

Harry Hobart Gauntt, son of Garrett H. Gauntt and Phyllis Sanderson, died July 12, 1935 near Stevens Station, Burlington County, New Jersey at the young age of 17.  He is my 3rd cousin once removed on my Gauntt line.

Mable Louise Wickery, daughter of Lewis C. Wickery and Dora Helen Gaunt, died July 12, 1980 in Orange County, California at the age of 60.  She is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

William Allen Easlick, son of Allen Severs Easlick and Mary E. Shemeley, was born July 11, 1897 in Juliustown or Arneymount, Burlington County, New Jersey.  He is my 3rd cousin once removed on my Gauntt line through the Easlicks.

George Moore "Dickie" Sellers, son of Cornelius Elmer Sellers and Laura May Armstrong, was born July 11, 1908 in Mount Holly, Burlington County, New Jersey.  He is my half granduncle.

Miriam Gaunt, daughter of Walter Clayton Gaunt and Luly May Sherman, was born July 11, 1921 in Portland, Jay County, New Jersey.  She is my 5th cousin once removed via the Gaunts.

Nolan Sidney Gaunt, son of Walter Everett Gaunt and Norma Marguerite Prusso, was also born July 11, 1921, but in Centerville, Alameda County, California.  He is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts and Miriam Gaunt's 3rd cousin once removed.

Rene Black was born July 11, 1924.  She was the second wife of Daniel Gaunt, son of Walter Clayton Gaunt and Lulu May Sherman, who is my 5th cousin once removed via the Gaunts, like his sister, Miriam (above).

Bryna Polonsky was born July 11, 1949 in Montreal, Québec, Canada.  She is the wife of Murray Cohen, son of Louis Cohen and Jennie Kardish, who is my 2nd cousin once removed on my Gorodetsky line through the Kardishes.

Patricia Louise Higgins, daughter of Ervie Vernon Higgins and Reta Louise Onstine, was born July 11, 1951 in Yuba County, California.  She is my 6th cousin on my Gauntt line through the Higginses.

Myla Kay Study, daughter of Jon Allen Study and Carolyn Sue Jack, was born July 11, 1956.  She is my 6th cousin once removed on my Gauntt line through the Jacks.

Anna Marie Swaim was born July 11, 1971.  She is my 5th cousin 2x removed.

Kimberly Ann Jones was born July 11, 1972.  She is my 6th cousin.

Kathleen Eileen Kelly was born July 11, 1985.  She is my 5th cousin 2x removed.

Ner Gaunt, son of Jacob Gaunt and Hannah Holmes, died July 11, 1841 in Jay County, Indiana at the age of 30.  He is my 1st cousin 5x removed via the Gaunts.

Charles Yates died July 11, 1972, possibly in New Jersey.  He was the husband of Grace Allen, daughter of Russell Roberts Allen and Estella A. Horner, who is my 5th cousin on my Gauntt line through the Allens.

Rothell Leaton Thurman died July 11, 1987 in Santa Cruz County, California, possibly in Watsonville.  He was the husband of Bertha May Gaunt, daughter of William Alvin Gaunt and Mamie B. Mitchell, who is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

Caroline Gaunt, daughter of Samuel M. Gaunt and Caroline Horner, was born July 10, 1863 in Mullica Hill, Gloucester County, New Jersey on her father's 46th birthday (above).  She is my 4th cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

Frederick Dunstan, son of Frederick Cleworth Dunstan and Martha Winn, was born July 10, 1868 in Manchester, Lancashire, England.  He is my great-granduncle.

Sadie Gussie Bogus, daughter of Abraham Bogus and Minnie Posner, was born July 10, 1906, probably in Manhattan, New York County, New York.  She was the sister of Ida Bogus, who was the first wife of Harry Herman Meckler, son of Morris Meckler and Minnie Zelda Nowicki, who is my granduncle.  The Boguses are supposed to be related to Jan Peerce, who sang at my maternal grandmother's wedding.

Rhoda Cohen, daughter of Louis Cohen and Jennie Kardish, was born July 10, 1945 in Montreal, Québec, Canada.  She is my 2nd cousin once removed on my Gorodetsky line through the Kardishes.

William Paul Dodge, son of Walter Garland Dodge and Lois Elizabeth Higgins, was born July 10, 1947 in Yuba County, California.  He is my 6th cousin on my Gauntt line through the Higginses.

Kevin Brian Gaunt, son of Harvey Joseph Gaunt, Jr. and his first wife, was born July 10, 1951 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.  He is my 3rd cousin via the Gaunts.

Matthew William Stricker was born July 10, 1985.  He is my 5th cousin 2x removed.

Benjamin Ian Monat was born July 10, 1990.  He is my 3rd cousin.

Sarah Ann Harris died July 10, 1871, probably in Columbiana County, Ohio, at the age of 29.  She was the wife of Ner Gaunt, son of Benjamin Gaunt and Mary Sheets, who is my 2nd cousin 4x removed via the Gaunts.

Mary M. Walker died July 10, 1950 in Camden, Camden County, New Jersey at the age of 85.  She was the wife of John Gaunt, Jr., son of John Gaunt and Ellen R. Bannon, who is my 3rd cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

Rufus Barker, son of Walter Barker and Carrie Bell Crawford, died July 10,  1966 at the age of 33.  He is the 1st cousin 2x removed of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams on her Crawford line.

Lillie L. Fuller. daughter of Joseph R. Fuller and Sarah R. Weaver, died July 10, 1970 in Lakewood, Los Angeles County, California at the age of 78.  She is the grandaunt of my aunt Mary McStroul.

Glenna Hazel Cage, daughter of James W. Cage and Mary Rosella Hutson, died July 10, 1981 in Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana at the age of 85.  She is my 5th cousin 2x removed on my Gauntt line through the Hutsons.

Caroline Catherine Ludeker was born July 9, 1913 in Ripley County, Indiana.  She was the wife of Norman Henry Hoyer, son of Rollin Henry Hoyer and Bessie Floreen Schwier, who is my 6th cousin once removed on my Gauntt line through the Schwiers.

Justin David Preisner was born July 9, 2005.  He is the grandnephew of my aunt Mary McStroul.

Marriages

Sam Bernstein and Rose Gordon (originally Gorodetsky), daughter of Victor Gordon and Esther Leah Schneiderman, were married July 9, 1927 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.  Rose is my great-grandaunt.

Thomas E. Rosser and Kathleen Loretta Gaunt, daughter of Claude Wesley Gaunt and Florence Manila Brooks, were married July 9, 1942 in Los Angeles County, California.  Kathleen is my 5th cousin once removed via the Gaunts.

Lorne Brian Weinstein and Rebecca Jill Lieberman were married July 9, 1989 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.  Lorne is my 4th cousin.

Jeffrey David Gordon and Stephanie Edie Cardoni were married July 9, 2011 in Hollister, San Benito County, California.  Jeff is my 2nd cousin once removed.

William Chase and Ingrid S. Moldenhauer also were married July 9, 2011, but I don't know where yet.  William is my 4th cousin once removed.

Deaths

Emmaline Bowker, daughter of John Bowker and Louisa J. Armstrong, died July 9, 1875 in Mill Ham, Mercer County, New Jersey at the age of 21.  She is my 1st cousin 4x removed via the Armstrongs.

Robert Barclay Gaunt, son of Samuel Gaunt, Jr. and Ann Horner, died July 9, 1900 in West Deptford, Gloucester County, New Jersey at the age of 62.  He is my 3rd cousin 4x removed via the Gaunts.

Almeada Kathryn Cain died July 9, 1980 in Lima, Allen County, Ohio at the age of 57.  She was the wife of Denzel Rowland Earehart, son of Ira Delbert Earehart and Doris Lavina Rowland, who is my 5th cousin once removed on my Gauntt line through the Rowlands.

The deaths for this day are (relatively) young, although there is definitely a difference between a child dying at age 5 and adults dying in their 50's.

Ruth Pollack, daughter of Isaac Pollack and Bessie Brainin, was born July 8, 1926 in Manhattan, New York County, New York.  She is my 1st cousin 2x removed via the Brainins.

Robert Francis Bowen, son of Francis Maria Bowen and Louise Elsie Gaynor, was born July 8, 1929 in Orange, Essex County, New Jersey.  He is the maternal uncle of my half-sister Laura Sellers.

Gary William Lederman, son of Victor Lederman and Edith Albert, was born July 8, 1955 in Astoria, Queens County, New York.  He is my 2nd cousin once removed on my Gorodetsky line through the Ledermans.

Laura Gabrielle Sarah Zindler was born July 8, 1998.  She is my 4th cousin once removed.

Murray Farbman died July 8, 1970 in Pennsylvania at the age of 59.  He was the husband of Etta Millstein, daughter of Nathan Millstein and Sarah Gordon, who is my 1st cousin 2x removed via the Gordons.

Esther Segal died July 8, 1991 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada at the age of 53.  She was the wife of Lyman Ross, son of Charlie Ross and Annie Garber, who is my 3rd cousin once removed on my Meckler line through the Garbers.

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun: Elementary School Memories

Let's cast our memories back a long, long (long!) time ago to our early school days for this week's Saturday Night Genealogy Fun with Randy Seaver.

When I read the title "Elementary School Memories", one specific memory immediately came to mind.  When I was in the first grade, at Rorimer Elementary School in La Puente, California, in my class was a girl named Charlene who had not yet fully mastered the art of potty training.  She occasionally still had accidents at school.  Children being the cruel little brats that they are (and trust me, "brats" was not the first word that came to mind), almost everyone in the class picked on her and ostracized her.  I recall that I was the only student who still talked to her — and that the little brats then ostracized me also. 

Amazing how some things you never forget.  On the positive side, I remember her name, not the names of any of the brats.

Events in My Family Tree: July 7

Frederick Dunstan was my great-grandmother's brother.  While I was writing about his marriage for this post, I realized that even though he lived in the same area as my grandmother and father, neither one of them ever mentioned him when they talked about family.  It's too late to ask them now, of course, but I wonder if he and my great-grandmother didn't get along.

William Ellsworth Thackeray, son of Thomas B. Thackeray and Phoebe A. Miller, was born July 7, 1876 in Franklin County, Indiana.  He is my 4th cousin 3x removed on my Gauntt line through the Thackerays.

Elizabeth Opal Gaunt, daughter of Charles Edward Gaunt and Sarah Malinda Kennedy, was born July 7, 1896 in Lawrenceburg, Lawrence County, Tennessee.  She is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

Dora Sorin was born July 7, 1907 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.  She was the wife of Harry Golub, son of Yechail Golubchik and Peshe Mekler, who is my 2nd cousin 2x removed via the Meklers.

Frieda Andree, daughter of Johann Andree and Ernestine Krebs, was born July 7, 1912 in New York, possibly in Manhattan.  She is the 1st cousin once removed of my aunt Mary McStroul through the Krebses.

Merle Gaunt, daughter of Walter Clayton Gaunt and Lulu May Sherman, was born July 7, 1915 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana.  She is my 5th cousin once removed via the Gaunts.

Juanita Fern Slentz, daughter of Andrew Earl Slentz and Bessie Florence Landis, was born July 7, 1920 in Drumright, Creek County, Oklahoma.  She is my 5th cousin once removed on my Gauntt line through the Slentzes.

Pearl May Frazier was born July 7, 1937 in Charleston, Charleston County, South Carolina.  She was the wife of Freddie J. Crawford, son of Preston Crawford and Annie Mariah Dixon, who is the 2nd cousin once removed of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams.

Robbin Patricia McStroul, daughter of Darwin Monroe McStroul and Rose Ruth Bloom, was born July 7, 1939 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin.  She is the 1st cousin of my aunt Mary McStroul.

Jane Lois Gauntt, daughter of Thomas Franklin Gauntt and Anna Marie Stayton, was born July 7, 1945 in New Jersey, possibly in Burlington County.  She is my 1st cousin once removed on my Gauntt line.

Kevin Kardash, son of Louis Kardash and Mary Udashkin, was born July 7, 1946 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.  He is my 2nd cousin once removed on my Gorodetsky line through the Kardashes.

Teri Sue Snyder was born July 7, 1963.  She is my 6th cousin.

Andrew Brand Schumeister was born July 7, 1988.  He is my 4th cousin once removed.

James Newbill Armstrong and Beatrice Ruth Anna Swain, daughter of Thomas Daniel Swain and Rachel Anna Armstrong, were married July 7, 1928 in Norfolk City, Virginia.  Beatrice is my 1st cousin 2x removed through Rachel Armstrong.

William Thomas Spencer, Jr. and Jeanette E. Hudson, daughter of Harry J. Hudson and Irene Elizabeth Allen, were married July 7, 1951, possibly in New Jersey.  Jeanette is my 5th cousin on my Gauntt line through the Allens and got married on her brother Robert's 14th birthday (above).

Marc Wesley Mallow, son of David Wade Mallow and Mary Alice Gauntt, and Bonnie Louise Gordon were married July 7, 1984 in St. Lucie County, Florida.  Marc is my 2nd cousin via the Gauntts.

Deaths

Mary Linda Gaunt, daughter of Robert Barclay Gaunt and Harriet Prickett, died July 7, 1867 in New Jersey, possibly in Gloucester County, at the age of 16 weeks.  She is my 4th cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

Clifford Ellsworth Hutson, Jr., son of Clifford Ellsworth Hutson, Sr. and Alta Ada Gipson, died July 7, 1945 in San Diego County, California at the age of 20.  He is my 6th cousin once removed on my Gauntt line through the Hutsons.

Alice Louise Gaunt, daughter of Lewis Allen Gaunt and Opal Esther Westrick, died July 7, 1963 in Ft. Wayne, Allen County, Indiana at the age of 41.  She is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.
