Marjorie Diane Jacobson was born December 9, 1947, possibly in New York.  She is the wife of Mark E. Gershwind, son of Irving Lawrence Gershwind and Frances Perlman, who is my 2nd cousin 1x removed on my Nowicki line through the Perlmans.

Forrest Ronald Appleton, son of Jose Ramon Castaneda and Ruth Anne Appleton, was born December 9, 1959 in Miami, Dade County, Florida.  He is my half 1st cousin 1x removed on my Gauntt line through the Appletons.

Marriages

Walter Garland Dodge and Lois Elizabeth Higgins, daughter of Ervie Oscar Higgins and Elizabeth Opal Gaunt, were married December 9, 1940, possibly in Sutter County, California.  Lois is my 5th cousin 1x removed via the Gaunts.

Claire Calvin Mowrey and Gail Carol Dubell, daughter of Charles Barton Dubell and Myrtle Lydia Allen, were married December 9, 1961, possibly in Burlington County, New Jersey.  Gail is my 5th cousin 1x removed on my Gauntt line through the Allens.

John Joseph Preisner, Jr. and Sonja M. Cross were married December 9, 1999.  John is the nephew of my aunt Mary McStroul, the son of her sister Anna McStroul, and the 1st cousin of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams.

Shawn Allen Brown and Angela Jean Williams were married December 9, 2011.  Angela is my not-quite-cousin and the niece of my aunt Mary McStroul and her sister Anna McStroul.

Deaths

Carol Alene Gauntt, daughter of James Kirkland Gauntt and Newita Wanda Scott, died December 9, 2004 in Lavaca, Sebastian County, Arkansas at the age of 71.  She is my 1st cousin 1x removed on my Gauntt line.

Mary Lotter died December 9, 2013, possibly in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana, at the age of 91.  She was married to Edward Lee Gaunt, Jr., son of Edward Lee Gaunt and Ethyl Fay Davison, who is my 5th cousin 1x removed via the Gaunts.

Events in My Family Tree: November 25

I am related to both Louis Perlman and Jennie Novitsky, who were 1st cousins 1x removed and who were married 64 years.  When I wrote this post, I realized for the first time that they both died on November 25.  But that's on the Christian calendar.  They were Jewish.  So the important dates for their deaths are the ones on the Jewish calendar, because that's when the yahrzeit is observed.  Amazingly, the yahrzeit is the same for both of them:  Louis died 19 Kislev 5733, and Jennie died 19 Kislev 5744.

Amanda Virginia Easlick, daughter of Jonathan Easlick and Susannah Sever, was born November 25, 1883 in Pemberton Township, Burlington County, New Jersey.  She is my 2nd cousin 2x removed on my Gauntt line through the Easlicks.

Dean Roger Allen, son of Clarence Allen, Jr. and Grace L. Stagnato, was born November 25, 1955, probably in New Jersey.  He is my 5th cousin 1x removed on my Gauntt line through the Allens.

Steven Craig Garfield, son of Irwin Garfield and Lenore Schachter, was born November 25, 1964 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.  He is my 4th cousin on my Meckler line through the Garfields.

Edwin William Townsend, Jr. was born November 25, 1969.  He is my 5th cousin 2x removed.

Paul David Cucinotta was born November 25, 1970.  He is my 2nd cousin 1x removed.

Jamie Gennifer Freitag was born November 25, 1983.  She is my 4th cousin 1x removed.

Stacy T. Gaunt, son of Samuel Gaunt and Achsah Taylor, and Ruth Townsend were married November 25, 1829 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.  Stacy is my 2nd cousin 5x removed via the Gaunts.

Larry Dean Walworth and Shirley Hunt, daughter of John F. Hunt and Lois Adele Weaver, were married November 25, 1968 in Fort Myers, Lee County, Florida.  Shirley is my 5th cousin 1x removed on my Gauntt line through the Weavers.

Robert Lewis Newman, son of Clarence Robert Laverne Newman and Ruth Anne Appleton, and Lisa Jayne Roth were married November 25, 1992 in Casper, Natrona County, Wyoming.  Robert is my half 1st cousin 1x removed on my Gauntt line through the Appletons.

Deaths

Abigail S. Allen, daughter of George N. Allen and Ada E. Mason, died November 25, 1904, probably in New Jersey, at the age of 6.  She is my 4th cousin 1x removed on my Gauntt line through the Allens.

Margaret Katherine Winstel died November 25, 1951 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio at the age of 70.  She was the wife of Clayton Emmert Gage, son of James W. Gage and Mary Rosella Hutson, who is my 5th cousin 2x removed on my Gauntt line through the Hutsons.

John Gaunt, son of Walter Clayton Gaunt and Lulu May Sherman, died November 25, 1957, probably in Indiana, at the age of 52.  He is my 5th cousin 1x removed via the Gaunts.

Louis Perlman (originally Leiser Perlmutter), son of Maishe Eli Perlmutter and Ethel Nowicki, died November 25, 1972 in Miami, Dade County, Florida at the age of about 85.  He is my 2nd cousin 2x removed on my Nowicki line.

Jennie Novitsky (originally Zlate Nowicki), daughter of Gershon Itzhak Novitsky and Dora Yelsky, died November 25, 1983 in Long Beach, Nassau County, New York at the age of about 98.  She is my great-grandaunt on my Nowicki line.

Janet Sauder died November 25, 1988 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada at the age of about 64.  She was the wife of Edward James Garber, son of Zelig Garber and Ida Mekler, who is my 2nd cousin 2x removed via the Meklers.

Thomas Herbert Gauntt, son of Thomas Franklin Gauntt and Anna Marie Stayton, died November 25, 2001, possibly in Mannington, Marion County, West Virginia, at the age of 62.  He is my 1st cousin 1x removed on my Gauntt line.

Jose Ramon Castañeda was born November 14, 1937 in Habana, Cuba.  He was the first husband of Ruth Anne Appleton, daughter of Chester Lewis Appleton, Jr. and Ruth Carrie Stradling, who is my half 1st cousin on my Gauntt line via the Stradlings.

Billy Joe Slentz, son of Earl Leroy Slentz and Mildred Juanita Duncan, was born November 14, 1943 in Rusk County, Texas.  He is my 6th cousin on my Gauntt line via the Slentzes.

Henry Olt died November 14, 1907 in Burlington County, New Jersey at the age of 34.  He was the first husband of Elizabeth H. Gaunt, daughter of Reuben Lewallen Gaunt and Lucy Bounds, who is my 3rd cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

Jennifer Anne Gaunt, daughter of David Clinton Gaunt and Carole Larene Porter, died November 14, 1969 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana, having lived less than one day.  She is my 6th cousin 1x removed via the Gaunts.

Lillyan E. Gordon, daughter of Joe Gordon (originally Joine Gorodetsky) and Sarah Libby Brainin, died October 17, 2006 at the age of 87.  She is my maternal grandmother (my Bubbie).

Lillian May Hoyer, daughter of Rollin Henry Hoyer and Bessie Florence Schwier, was born September 15, 1912 in Ripley County, Indiana.  She is my 6th cousin once removed via the Schwiers.

Nellie Heath, daughter of Harley Heath and Agnes Ruth Fell, was born September 15, 1914 in New York.  She is the 2nd cousin once remoed of my aunt Mary McStroul on her Heath line.

Harry Mark Gaunt III, son of Henry Mark Gaunt, Jr. and Lavonda Imogene Blaylock, died June 12, 1995 in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana at the age of 48.  He is my 6th cousin via the Gaunts.

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun (on Sunday!): A Veteran's Service and Gravesite

I've missed the past few Saturday Night Genealogy Fun challenges, mostly because they were repeats of ones from previous years and I didn't have anything new to say.  This weekend, however, Randy Seaver came up with a new twist for Veterans Day:

Here is your assignment, should you decide to accept it (you ARE reading this, so I assume that you really want to play along; cue the Mission:  Impossible! music!):

(1) To celebrate Veterans Day, pick one of your ancestors or relatives with a military record and a gravestone.

(2) Tell us about your ancestor's military service.

(3) Tell us about your ancestor's gravestone:  Where is it, what is the inscription, when were you last there?  Show us a picture of it if you have one available. 

(4) Write your own blog post about this ancestor and gravestone, or share it in a comment to this blog post or in a  Facebook post.

The reason I wasn't able to do this for Saturday is because at first I couldn't find one of my military relatives for whom I had a photo of a gravestone.  I went through several ancestors, futilely searching:

Umpty-umpth-great-grandfather Hananiah Gaunt, Revolutionary War veteran:  no known tombstone in his own time

Umpty-umpth-great-grandafther (one fewer generation than Hananiah Gaunt) Moses Mulliner, Revolutionary War veteran:  no known tombstone in his own time, unknown location of grave now

Father Bertram Lynn Sellers, Jr., New Jersey and Florida Army National Guard veteran:  He doesn't have a tombstone.

That finished the ancestors whom I know had any type of military service.  Then on to collateral lines:

Maternal uncle Gary Steve Meckler, U.S. Army veteran:  I don't have a photograph of his tombstone.

First cousin John McKay Appleton, Coast Guard veteran:  I don't have a photo of his tombstone.

Second cousin once removed Victor Gordon, U.S. Navy veteran:  I don't have a photo of his tombstone.

Granduncle Sidney Gordon, World War II U.S. Navy veteran:  I don't have a photo of his tombstone.  At least I have photos of him in uniform during the war.

Great-granduncle William Brainin, World War I U.S. Army veteran:  I don't have a photo of his tombstone.  I used to have a photo of him in his Army uniform, but it has disappeared.

I also looked at individuals in my adoptive Sellers line:

Great-great-grandfather Cornelius Godshalk Sellers, Civil War veteran:  probably no tombstone originally, now unknown grave location (because the cemetery was sold for a housing development and only graves for which people ponied up money were moved)

Distant cousins Edwin Elias Sellers, career U.S. Army veteran, and his son David Foote Sellers, career U.S. Navy veteran, actually do have tombstones I can find images of.  I considered writing about one of them — and I would have had tons of material, because they both had long, well documented careers — but I kept hunting for someone on one of my blood-related lines.  And I finally found:

Great-granduncle David Harry Brainin, World War I U.S. Army veteran (and William's brother).  Born approximately March 25, 1888 (at least that's the date he used on some records in the United States), probably in or near Kreuzburg, Russian Empire (now Krustpils, Latvia); died May 6, 1971 in Vineland, Cumberland County, New Jersey; buried in Alliance Cemetery, Norma, Salem County, New Jersey.

I wrote about Dave and my discovery of what little I know of his Army service a few years ago.  He registered for the draft on June 5, 1917 in Butte, Montana.  According to his fast-tracked military petition for naturalization, he arrived at Camp Lewis, Washington on March 5, 1918.  He was naturalized as a U.S. citizen on June 4, 1918.  The two witnesses on his petition were a captain and a first lieutenant, probably officers in his unit.  I don't know when he officially entered or mustered out of the Army.

But I do have a photo of his tombstone:

There isn't much of an inscription:  Just BRAININ over DAVID 1888–1971 and BETTY 1900–1978.

There's about an 80% chance that any documents relating to Dave's service were destroyed in the 1973 National Personnel Records Center fire.  I actually live not far from what was Camp Lewis, now Joint Base Lewis-McChord.  I searched and discovered that Lewis Army Museum is on the base.  I doubt there will be anything specific to my uncle in the museum.  But I won't know for sure about either until I try, will I?

Yes, I'm a few days late on this, but I've been a little off schedule the past few months and am now trying to get back into the swing of things.  I figure a few days late is better than not at all, right?

So Randy Seaver chose this topic for the recent Saturday Night Genealogy Fun because it was the day before Father's Day:

(1) It's Father's Day in the USA on Sunday, so let's talk about our fathers.  

(2) Show us your favorite photograph of your father — the one that shows him in the best light possible.  Describe the occasion, the setting, and the people in the photograph.

(3) Tell us about it in your own blog post, in a comment on this post, or in a Facebook post.

This is hands down my favorite photo of my father.  He looks so adorable in his suit and hat!

Looking at the photo, it appears to be a mother and two children, right?  Nothing that straightforward with my family!  The people in the photo are my father, Lynn Sellers; his oldest half-sister, Ruth (Stradling) Appleton (the only other surviving child that my grandmother bore); and Ruth's daughter, Ruth Anne Appleton.  Although there was only a difference of less than six years between them, my father was Ruth Anne's uncle.

My estimate for the year of the photo is about 1943.  My father looks to be about 7 years old or so, and Ruth Anne looks about 2.  They're all dressed up, and Ruth Anne is wearing a bonnet, so I think it's Easter.  I really need to ask Ruth Anne about that to find out if I'm right.  Ruth isn't so dressed up, so I don't know if she was going to church with them or not (assuming my guess about Easter is correct).

I know the setting has to be in New Jersey, but I don't know where.  I guess that's something else I should ask Ruth Anne.  Maybe she will recognize the house behind them.

Florence L. Major, daughter of Clayton Major and Ida May Lippincott, was born May 19, 1888 in Bordentown, Burlington County, New Jersey.  She is my 1st cousin 3x removed via the Lippincotts.

Martin Reuben Schumeister, son of Henry Schumeister and Celia Perlmutter, was born May 19, 1928 in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota.  He is my 3rd cousin once removed on my Nowicki line through the Perlmutters.

Kimberly Ann Gaunt, daughter of Irwin Wilson Gaunt and Shirley Ann Freck, was born May 19, 1958, possibly in Indiana.  She is my 6th cousin.

I have already discovered that finding this information directly in Family Tree Maker, my primary family tree program, does not work well.  The first results for a search for "January 1" or "1 January" are years with no months or dates.  I looked at the index of names, which shows birth and death dates, but there's apparently no way to export that information.  So I saved a GEDCOM file and imported it to Reunion.  The latter gives much better results than FTM but still isn't perfect — it returns those people with the correct month, but it doesn't seem to be able to also find the specific date.  No matter, it's a vast improvement.

Births

Jacob Longanecker, son of Daniel Longanecker and Sarah Mack, was born January 1, 1811, probably in Pennsylvania.  He is my 3rd cousin 5x removed on my Sellers line through the Macks.

Catherine Sellers, daughter of John Leonard Sellers and Elizabeth Wenger, was born January 1, 1835, probably in Pennsylvania.  She is my 3rd cousin 4x removed.

Florence Walton, daughter of Jerome B. Walton and Susan Sellers, was born January 1, 1868, in Union Township, Auglaize County, Ohio.  She is my 4th cousin 3x removed.

Charles Cooper Stradling was born January 1, 1895 in Texas, Middlesex County, New Jersey.  He was the husband of my paternal grandmother, Anna Gauntt.

William Kester Allen, son of Cyrus Kunze Allen and Clara Barton Shinn, was born January 1, 1908 in New Jersey, probably in Bordentown, Burlington County.  He is my 4th cousin once removed on my Gauntt line through the Allens.

I have been told that Baby Boy Gordon, son of Joe Gordon and Sarah Libby Brainin, was born January 1, 1915 in Manhattan, the first child of my maternal great-grandparents.

Kathleen Lynn Allen was born January 1, 1955 and is my 5th cousin once removed.

Brian Hise was born January 1, 1972 and is my 3rd cousin once removed.

Kaleb Appleton was born January 1, 1999 and is my 1st cousin 3x removed.

Marriages

Henry Rohr and Polly Sellers were married on January 1, 1797 in Abington, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.  Polly is my 1st cousin 2x removed.

John Wengard Sellers and Mary Melissa Conkle were married on January 1, 1829 in Allen County, Ohio.  John is my 3rd cousin 4x removed.

John Timothy Heath and Mary Etta Smith were married on January 1, 1884, probably in Warren County, New York.  They are the great-grandparents of my aunt Mary.

Thomas Daniel Swain and Rachel Anna Armstrong were married on January 1, 1912 in Burlington, Burlington County, New Jersey.  Rachel is my great-grandaunt and the sister of my great-grandmother Laura May Armstrong.

Moshe Amine and Florence Meckler were married on January 1, 1941 in Brooklyn, New York.  Florence is my grandaunt and the sister of my grandfather Abraham Meckler.

Deaths

Hattie Lorena Fuller, daughter of Joseph L. Fuller and Sarah R. Weaver, died January 1, 1914 in Warrensburg, Warren County, New York at the age of 26.  She was the grandmother of my aunt Mary.

Cecil Deacon Lucas, son of John Deacon Lucas and Idella May Nixon, died January 1, 1998 at the age of 91.  He was married to Nora Elizabeth Eckman, the sister of my grandaunt Bertha Poinsett Eckman and granduncle Edwin Bunting Eckman.

Fred Adams, son of John White and Alma Adams, died January 1, 2000 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio at the age of 76.  He is the granduncle of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams.
