Three Grandmothers with the Same Birthday

It's easy to say that something is against the odds, but how do you determine the odds?

I've read about statistics that once you get something like 50 people together in one place, it's almost guaranteed that two of them will have the same birthday.  (I've read it, but I still don't understand it.)  But what about when you're dealing with only two or three people?  The odds have to be much lower, right?

Yet low odds are not impossible odds.

For our example here, we have my half-sister, Laurie.

We have the same father, so we share a paternal grandmother.  Anna Gauntt was born January 14, 1893.

Laurie's maternal grandmother, Louise Elsie Gaynor, was born January 14, 1903.

Okay, all you statisticians out there, can we figure out the odds of that happening?

But I'll go one step further.

Our paternal grandfather married twice after living with our grandmother.  His third wife, to whom he was married before I was born, and who can reasonably be called our stepgrandmother (my mother certainly always told me to call her Grandma), was Adelle Cordelia Taylor.  And she was born January 14, 1914.

What are the odds on that particular situation?  I certainly don't know.  Maybe our brother or sister-in-law can figure it out.  They're the mathematicians in the family.  Which I realize is not the same as a statistician, but it's the closest we have.

So today, on January 14, I'll wish a happy birthday in heaven to three of my sister's grandmothers.

This is the type of thing I noticed while going through a year's worth of births, marriages, and deaths in my family.

Family historians are a strange breed.

Alice Mullin was born December 22, 1906 in New Jersey.  She was married to John Francis Gaynor, Jr., son of John Francis Gaynor and Josephine O'Connor, who is the great-granduncle of my half-sister Laurie Sellers and her half-sister Shanyn James.

Sidney Gordon, son of Joe Gordon (originally Joyne Gorodetsky) and Sarah Libby (originally Sore Leiba) Brainin, was born December 22, 1915 in Manhattan, New York County, New York.  He is my granduncle.

Florence Meckler, daughter of Morris Mackler (originally Moishe Meckler) and Minnie (originally Mushe) Zelda Nowicki, was also born December 22, 1915, but in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.  She is my grandaunt.

Harvey Stephen Gordon, son of Alexander Gordon and Roslyn Rubin, was born December 22, 1944 in Miami Beach, Dade County, Florida.  He is my 1st cousin 1x removed on my Gordon line.

George Steven Monat was born December 22, 1953 in Anniston, Calhoun County, Alabama.  He is the husband of Janis Susan Brainin, daughter of Harold Leon Brainin and Ruth Pauline Schwartz, who is my 2nd cousin 1x removed.

Marriage

Lewis Allen Gaunt, son of Lewis Cass Gaunt and Mary A. Kindlesparger, and Sylvia Belle Black were married December 22, 1906 in Miami County, Indiana.  Lewis is my 3rd cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

Deaths

Redden N. Gaunt, son of Joseph Gaunt and Phoebe Emily Severn, died December 22, 1864 in Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, Tennessee at the age of 43.  He is my 2nd cousin 4x removed via the Gaunts.

Harry A. Schwartz, son of Joseph Schwartz and Anna Ajzner, died December 22, 1990 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California at the age of 80.  He is the 1st cousin 1x removed of my 3rd cousin 1x removed Esther Garfinkel on her Ajzner line.

William George Facenda, Jr. died December 18, 1959 in Santa Clara County, California at the age of about 33.  He was the first husband of Mabel Ellen Elizabeth Brickel, daughter of James Newbill Armstrong and Beatrice Ruth Anna Swain, who is my 2nd cousin 1x removed on my Armstrong line through the Swains.

Kenneth Charles O'Brien died December 18, 1999 in Clarks Summit, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania at the age of 48.  He was the first husband of Carol Beth Sellers, daughter of Bertram Lynn Sellers, Sr. and Anita Clarice Loveman, who is my aunt.

Edith E. Dickensheets, daughter of George W. Dickensheets and Albertine P. Gaunt, was born September 12, 1885 in Gloucester, Camden County, New Jersey.  She is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

Virginia Theresa Gantt, daughter of Carl Thomas Gantt and Mabelle Yost, was born September 12, 1919 in Bradshaw, York County, Nebraska.  She is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gantts.

Herman David Jacobs was born September 12, 1981 in Grant County, Indiana.  He was married to Marjorie Louise Clark, daughter of Oliver Franklin Clark and Mildred Blanche Benson, who is my 5th cousin once removed on my Gauntt line through the Clarks.

Virginia Ann Bennett was born September 12, 1942 in Mount Holly, Burlington County, New Jersey.  She was married to Richard Bruce Sellers, Sr., son of George Moore Sellers and Bertha Poinsett Eckman, who is my half 1st cousin once removed on my Sellers line.

Michael Allen, son of Thomas Gerald Allen and Doris Filer, was born September 12, 1961.  He is my 5th cousin once removed on my Gauntt line through the Allens.

Bonnie Jean Gaynor, daughter of James Owen Gaynor, Jr. and Ruth Heard Hunt, was born September 12, 1961 in Sparta, Essex County, New Jersey.  She is the 2nd cousin of my half-sister Laura Sellers on her Gaynor line.

Machelle Renee Gaunt was born Septemer 12, 1962.  She is my 6th cousin.

Jeffrey S. Gauntt was born September 12, 1969.  He is my half 4th cousin.

Wanda Jean Hudson was born September 12, 1970.  She is my 5th cousin once removed.

Ryan Morris Kardish was born September 12, 1990.  He is my 3rd cousin.

Eugene Washington McStroul, son of Leo Martin McStroul and Anna Krebs, and Shirley N. Mislove were married September 12, 1936 in Waukegan, Lake County, Illinois.  Eugene is the father of my aunt Mary McStroul.

David Lieff, son of Sam Lieff and Libby Kardish, and Zena Koffman were married September 12, 1971 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.  David is my 2nd cousin once removed on my Gorodetsky line via the Kardishes.

Death

Elizabeth Evans Githens, daughter of Thomas Githens and Mary Gaunt, died September 12, 1886 in Atlantic City, Atlantic County, New Jersey at the age of 53.  She is my 2nd cousin 4x removed via the Gaunts.
