James Owen Gaynor, son of John Francis Gaynor and Josephine O'Connor, was born December 3, 1901 in Manhattan, New York County, New York.  He is the granduncle of my half-sister Laura Sellers.

Joseph Russell Allen, son of Russell Roberts Allen and Estella A. Horner, was born December 3, 1929 in Tabernacle, Burlington County, New Jersey.  He is my 5th cousin on my Gauntt line through the Allens.

Russell Eli Smith was born December 3, 1930 in New Jersey.  He was the husband of Blanche Catherine Gauntt, daughter of Robert Elwood Gauntt and Elsie May West, who is my 4th cousin 1x removed on my Gauntt line.

Bert Ross, son of Charlie Ross and Annie Garber, was born December 3, 1940 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.  He is my 3rd cousin 1x removed on my Meckler line through the Garbers.

Pamela Elaine Gaunt, daughter of Robert Gaunt and Mary Evelyn Westbrooks, was born December 3, 1952 in Indiana.  She is my 6th cousin via the Gaunts.

Simon Krebs, son of Hirschel Krebs and Philippine Salamon, and Dorothea Schiffer, daughter of Daniel Schiffer and Henriette Meyer, were married December 3, 1828 in Gleiwitz, Obersilesia, Prussia.  Simon and Dorothea are the great-great-grandparents of my aunt Mary McStroul and the 3x-great-grandparents of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams.

Deaths

Cyrus Kunze Allen died December 3, 1863 in Medford, Burlington County, New Jersey at the age of about 25.  He was married to Hannah Ann Gaunt, daughter of Joseph L. Gaunt and Elizabeth Hopkins, who is my 2nd cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

John B. Slentz, son of Ephraim Slentz and Zilpha Emily Gaunt, died December 3, 1931 in Switz City, Greene County, Indiana at the age of about 56.  He is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

Adam Kyle Freitag, son of Evan Freitag and Jessica Starkman, died December 3, 1994, possibly in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, at the age of 12.  He is my 4th cousin 1x removed on my Meckler line through the Freitags.

Johann Andree died November 28, 1923 in Bronx, Bronx County, New York.  He was the husband of Ernestine Krebs, daughter of Isaac Krebs and Frederika Weiss, who is the grandaunt of my aunt Mary McStroul and the great-grandaunt of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams on their Krebs line.

Phoebe Thomas also died November 28, 1923, possibly in Nebraska.  She was the wife of Daniel Taylor Gantt, son of John Gantt and Rachel Carl, who is my 2nd cousin 4x removed via the Gantts.

William August Heath, son of Henry Heath and Eliza Bullock, died November 28, 1938, probably in Warren County, New York.  He is the great-granduncle of my aunt Mary McStroul and the great-great-granduncle of my not-quite-cousiin Angela Williams on their Heath line.

Don Howard Heath, son of John Timothy Heath and Mary Etta Smith, died November 28, 1959 in Warrensburg, Warren County, New York.  He is the grandfather of my aunt Mary McStroul and the great-grandfather of my not-quite-cousiin Angela Williams.

Events in My Family Tree: October 18

Four of the five marriages for today are for the Jewish side of my family, which is a far higher percentage than usual.  That is because the number 18 is considdered lucky in Jewish tradition.  What's interesting, however, is that two of the weddings appear to be a double wedding, which is bad luck in Jewish superstitions.

Ellen Gilfix was born October 18, 1962.  She is the wife of Barry James Garfield, son of Irwin Garfield (originally Garfinkel) and Lenore Schachter, who is my 4th cousin on my Meckler line through the Garfinkels.

Tammy L. Shepard was born October 18, 1963.  She is the wife of Lawrence Matthew Gordon, who is my 1st cousin 2x removed.

Christopher Simpson was born October 18, 1982.  He is my 5th cousin 2x removed.

Kari Eileen Ebeltoft was born October 18, 1983.  She is also my 5th cousin 2x removed.

Jacqueline Randall was born October 18, 1985.  She is my 3rd cousin 1x removed.

Frederick Cleworth Dunstan, son of Richard Dunstan and Jane Coleclough, and Martha Winn, daughter of Thomas Winn and Mary Parr(?), were married October 18, 1858 in Manchester, Lancashire, England.  They are my great-great-grandparents.

Sam Lieff and Libby Kardish, daughter of Dovid Kardish and Etta Gorodetsky, were married October 18, 1942 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.  Libby is my 1st cousin 2x removed via the Gorodetskys.

Samuel Kardish, son of Dovid Kardish and Etta Gorodetsky, and Tillie Steinberg were also married October 18, 1942 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.  Samuel is also my 1st cousin 2x removed via the Gorodetskys.

Lawrence Charles Gaunt, son of Calvert Gaunt and Annette Pearson, died October 18, 1980 in Wabash, Wabash County, Indiana.  He is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

George Kushner, son of Myrim Kushner and Chaye Golubchik, died October 18, 1995 in Riverside County, California.  He is my 3rd cousin 1x removed on my Meckler line via the Golubchiks.

Simon Krebs died on what would have been the 75th birthday of his wife, Dorothea Schiffer.  I suppose in its own way it was fortunate that she had died twelve years earlier, so her birthday wasn't ruined for the rest of her life.

Catherine Mary Gwin was born October 12, 1954 in Ruslip-Northwood, Middlesex, England.  She is the wife of Francis Lynn Neborsky, son of Francis Neborsky and Mildred Alice Sellers, who is my half 1st cousin.

Charles Milton Vanaman and Julia Ann Gaunt, daughter of Benjamin Selah Gaunt and Mary A. Allen, were married June 20, 1890 in Vincentown, Burlington County, New Jersey, on Julia's brother's birthday (above).  Julia is, of course, also my half 1st cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

Harry David Garfield, son of Morris Garfinkel and Mirka Ajzner, and Susan Loffler were married June 20, 1954 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.  Harry is my 3rd cousin once removed on my Meckler line through the Garfinkels and the brother of my dear cousin Esther Garfinkel.

Deaths

Carrie W. Adams, daughter of John White and Alma Adams, died June 20, 1986 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio at the age of 67.  She is the half-grandaunt of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams.

Dorothy Mae Gaunt, daughter of Harvey Joseph Gaunt and Jane Marie Conway, died June 20, 1992, possibly in New Jersey, at the age of 72.  She is my 2nd cousin once removed via the Gaunts.

Debra Lorene Hutson, daughter of Roscoe Freeman Hutson and Bessie Leone Scifert, died June 20, 2008 in East Jordan, Charlevoix County, Michigan at the age of 57.  She is my 7th cousin on my Gauntt line through the Hutsons.

Significant Anniversaries of 2021

What are the important milestones to note this year?  What events happened in my family 50, 75, or 100 years ago (that I have dates for)?  This year's most important events from my family tree program are from both my father and mother's sides of the family, the Sellerses, and my aunt's family.

250 Years Ago

On February 12, 1771, in Godalming, Surrey, England, my Aunt Mary's 4th-great-grandparents, George Heath and Martha Stu(a)rt, were married.  That's as far back as I got on my aunt's Heath line several years ago, well before FindMyPast started digitizing and posting all those lovely parish records.  I should get back to work with the Heaths to see how much more information I can find about them, and maybe even take the line a little bit further back in time.

200 Years Ago

On January 18, 1821, my 5th-great-grandfather Moses Mulliner died in Tuckerton, Burlington County, New Jersey.  Moses is the first Revolutionary War ancestor I learned I had.  Even though he was about 35 years old during the war, he was a drummer, which has engendered some discussion with others about his background.  One of these days I really need to get around to applying to DAR, if nothing else to make my registrar friends happy.

150 Years Ago

My paternal grandmother's mother, Jane Dunstan, was born on April 28, 1871 in Manchester, Lancashire, England.  She immigrated to the United States in 1890 and married almost right away, immediately becoming an American citizen by virtue of marrying a citizen.  My father remembered his grandmother well, particularly her English accent.

The second event from my aunt's family is another wedding, this one for her paternal great-grandparents Isaac/Isidore Krebs and Frederika Weiss, who were married on August 16, 1871 in Peiskretscham, Obersilesia, Prussia.  Ruger Lustig helped me find dozens of records on this branch of my aunt's family; I lucked out because the family was in Gleiwitz, and Roger happens to specialize in that area and has thousands of transcribed records available to search.

100 Years Ago

The last child Laura May (Armstrong) Sellers, my paternal grandfather's mother, had, Bertolet Grace Sellers, was born March 6, 1921 in Mt. Holly, Burlington County, New Jersey.  This was the daughter born three years after her husband had died.  Imagine the scandal in 1921!  I had my sister track down Bertolet's birth and death certificates because we were hoping they would include her father's name, going on the possibility that her father might be the same man as our grandfather's biological father.  (Depending on who her father was, she was my paternal grandfather's half-sister or possibly full sister.)  No such luck!  Our great-grandmother declined to list Bertolet's father on both the birth and the death certificates.

75 Years Ago

Although I don't write much about the Sellerses anymore, I feel an obligation to include Edwin Jaquett Sellers, who died January 11, 1946, probably in Philadelphia, where he lived most of his life.  He did have a short period when he lived in California, but he returned to the East Coast after that.  The reason I decided I should write about him is because he was also a genealogist, as a hobbyist.  He published about a dozen books on different lines of his family, including two for the Sellerses.  The first came in 1903 in a private printing of 150 copies; the second was in 1925 as an update to the original, with another 150 copies.  Yes, I have one of each, plus I found a second copy of the 1903 version for my brother.

50 Years Ago

I have to admit, I was really surprised when this one came up.  My first cousin Andy Meckler will turn 50 this April.  I have several first cousins, but Andy and his younger brother were probably the two my siblings and I saw the most growing up, so I really know him.  And I just can't imagine that he'll be turning 50!  I doubt I'll get to visit him in California, so I'll have to think of something special to do.

Eleanor Wallick was born May 1, 1813 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.  She was married to George Sellers, son of George Sellers and Magdalena Shirk, who is my 3rd cousin 4x removed.

Abel Amos Lippincott, son of Abel A. Lippincott and Rachel R. Stackhouse, was born May 1, 1848 in New Hanover Township, Burlington County, New Jersey.  He is my 2nd-great-granduncle.

Harry G. Gaunt, son of Robert Barclay Gaunt and Harriet Prickett, was born May 1, 1868 in Woodbury, Gloucester County, New Jersey.  He is my 4th cousin 3x removed.

John Eckman, son of Samuel Eckman and Sarah J. Gaskill, was born May 1, 1876 in Browns Mills, Burlington County, New Jersey.  He is the great-grandfather of my 1st cousin Albert Lore.

Lee Levy, son of Charles Levy and Elaine Gordon, was born May 1, 1858 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.  He is my 2nd cousin once removed via the Gordons.

Brandee A. Kelly was born May 1, 1964 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.  She is the 1st cousin once removed of my aunt Mary McStroul.

Kelly Jean Bowen was born May 1, 1974 in Mineola, Nassau County, New York.  She is the 2nd cousin of my half-sister Laurie Sellers.

Miles Harrison Kirsh was born May 1, 1993 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.  He is my 4th cousin once removed on my Meckler line.

Marriages

Elmer Gaunt, son of Samuel Gaunt, Jr. and Ann Horner, and Hannah Peterson were married on May 1, 1851 in Gloucester County, New Jersey.  Elmer is my 3rd cousin 4x removed.

Eugene Washington McStroul, son of Leo Martin McStroul (originally Moshe Leib Strul) and Anna Krebs, and Elizabeth Almira Heath, daughter of Don Howard Heath and Hattie Lorena Fuller, were married on May 1, 1941.  They are the parents of my aunt Mary McStroul.

George Stephen Altmier, Jr. and Ethyl May Gauntt, daughter of Mark Lewallen Gauntt, Jr. and Ethyl May Lake, were married on May 1, 1946 in Moorestown, Burlington County, New Jersey.  Ethyl is my 4th cousin once removed.

Richard Bruce Sellers, Sr., son of George Moore Sellers and Bertha Poinsett Eckman, and Catherine Andrews were married on May 1, 1958.  Richard is my 1st cousin once removed.

James Garrison and Deborah Clark, daughter of Charles Robert Clark and Dorthea Virginia Lynch, were married on May 1, 1987.  Deborah is my 5th cousin once removed on my Gauntt line through the Clarks.

Deaths

Hannah Smith died May 1, 1913 at the age of about 63, almost definitely in New Jersey and probably in Burlington County.  She was married to John A. Gaunt, son of Hananiah Selah Gaunt and Abigail Atkinson, who is my 2nd-great-granduncle.

Louise Elsie Gaynor, daughter of John Francis Gaynor and Josephone O'Connor, died May 1, 1984 at the age of 81 in Galax, Virginia.  She is the maternal grandmother of my half-sister Laurie Sellers.

Irwin Millstein, son of Nathan Millstein and Sarah Gordon, died May 1, 2003 at the age of 73, possibly in West Palm Beach, Palm Beach County, Florida.  He is my 1st cousin 2x removed via the Gordons.

Yesterday I had no deaths, but today I have no weddings.  I wonder if the lack of weddings is in any related to it being the 13th?  Maybe I had superstitious relatives?  I'll have to wait and see what results I get in the succeeding months.
