I've heard from friends that being a Christmas baby is mostly a disadvantage, because you often don't have a regular birthday party and people want to give you a combined birthday/Christmas present.  This is probably not a big problem when you're Jewish, right?

Mary Ann McGowan was born December 25, 1805 in Pennsylvania.  She was married to Joseph Gantt, son of Joseph Gaunt and Mary A. Lobaugh, who is my 1st cousin 5x removed via the Gaunts.

Pauline E. Smoot was born December 25, 1827 in Virginia.  She was married to Redden N. Gaunt, son of Joseph Gaunt and Phoebe Emily Severn, who is my 2nd cousin 4x removed via the Gaunts.

Wilma Elizabeth Norris was born December 25, 1912 in Orestes, Madison County, Indiana.  She was married to Neil Gaunt Clark, son of Oren Wilson Clark and Anna G. Gaunt, who is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

Irene Bassie (Bessai?) Dubensky was born December 25, 1920, possibly in Ohio.  She was the third wife of Harry Herman Mackler, son of Morris Mackler (originally Moishe Meckler) and Minnie (originally Mushe) Zelda Nowicki, who is my granduncle.

Gene Paul Gaunt, son of Clarence Meridith Gaunt and Mary Grace Stewart, was born December 25, 1931 in California.  He is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

Melanie Amron, daughter of Eli Morton Amron and Alice Gold, was born December 25, 1952 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.  She is my 4th cousin on my Nowicki line through the Amrons.

Edward James Ellis, Jr. was born December 25, 1977.  He is my 2nd cousin 1x removed.

Marriages

Nathan Gaunt, son of Samuel Gaunt and Achsah Taylor, and Sarah Coles were married December 25, 1823 in Swedesboro, Gloucester County, New Jersey.  Nathan is my 2nd cousin 5x removed via the Gaunts.

Richard Dunstan, son of James Dunstan and Maria Hilton, and Jane Coleclough were married December 25, 1833 in Manchester, Lancashire, England.  They are my 3x-great-grandparents.

James Andrews and Mary D. Gaunt, daughter of Hananiah Selah Gaunt and Mary Elizabeth Rose, were married December 25, 1841 in Tuckerton, Burlington County, New Jersey.  Mary is my half 2nd-great-grandaunt.

Francis D. Matthews and Susannah H. Gaunt, another daughter of Hananiah Selah Gaunt and Mary Elizabeth Rose, were married December 25, 1876, probably in New Jersey.  Susannah is also my half 2nd-great-grandaunt.

Floyd Richard Williams, son of Preston Frank Williams and Priscilla Crawford, and Susie Lee Adams, daughter of Alma Adams, were married December 25, 1927 in Muscogee County, Georgia.  They are the paternal grandparents of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams.

Deaths

Isaac Gaunt, son of Hananiah Gaunt and Rebecca Mulliner, died December 25, 1864 in Tuckerton, Burlington County, New Jersey at the age of 77.  He is my 3rd-great-granduncle.

James H. Fuller, son of Joseph E. Fuller and Lorina G. Tripp, died December 25, 1929 in Stony Creek, Warren County, New York at the age of 80.  He is the 2nd-great-granduncle of my aunt Mary McStroul and her sister Anna McStroul, and the 3rd-great-granduncle of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams.

Janet Edna Weaver, daughter of James Henry Weaver and Ada Adelle Allen, died December 25, 2005, possibly in Whiting, Ocean County, New Jersey, at the age of 75.  She is my 5th cousin on my Gauntt line through the Allens.

Joseph W. Bonifas, son of Charles Dennison Bonifas, Sr. and Georgia Grace Gaunt, died December 25, 2011 in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana at the age of 80.  He is my 6th cousin via the Gaunts.

I was fortunate to have met Mort Perlman before he suddenly passed away.  He was a very nice person and shared a lot of information about my family.

Lois Elaine McStroul, daughter of Fred Lincoln McStroul and Belle Silberman, was born December 7, 1938 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin.  She is the 1st cousin of my aunt Mary McStroul and her sister Anna McStroul, and the 1st cousin 1x removed on my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams.

Shirley Mae Mantell, daughter of Harold Yorkes Mantell and Gladys Mabel Allen, was born December 7, 1941 in New Jersey, probably in Burlington County.  She is my 5th cousin 1x removed on my Gauntt line through the Allens.

Gordon Owen Carnie was born December 7, 1951 in San Diego County, California.  He is the husband of Janet E. Brainin, daughter of Samuel Michael Brainin and Blanche Mildred Sax, who is my 2nd cousin 1x removed on my Brainin line.

Lora Pauline Yandell, daughter of Arnold Lorn Yandell and Myrtle Augusta Higgins, was born December 7, 1952 in Yuba County, California.  She is my 6th cousin on my Gauntt line through the Higginses.

Timothy Reilly, son of Edward Reilly and Eileen Gaynor, was born December 7, 1961.  He is the half 2nd cousin 1x removed of my half-sister Laurie Sellers on her Gaynor line.

Erin Denice Robertson was born December 7, 1984.  She is my 6th cousin.

Andrew Cerone was born December 7, 1992.  He is the 2nd cousin 2x removed of my half-sister Laurie Sellers.

David Maxwell Rudin was born December 7, 1994.  He is my 4th cousin 1x removed.

Uz Millard Votaw, son of Millard F. Votaw and Ida May Fisher, and Ruth E. Barnett were married December 7, 1912 in Wabash County, Indiana.  Uz is my 4th cousin 2x removed on my Gauntt line through the Votaws.

Clarence Gilbert Lore, son of Clarence Newcomb Lore and Dorothy Mae Sellers, and Pamela Jean Knox were married December 7, 1989 in Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware.  Gil is my half 1st cousin on my Sellers line.

James Knox Polk Gaunt, son of Uz Gaunt and Sarah Ann Whitacre, died December 7, 1933 in Hanford, Kings County, California at the age of 83.  He is my 2nd cousin 4x removed via the Gaunts.

Watson Edward Thomson died December 7, 1966 in Lewis County, Washington at the age of 78.  He was married to Lillie L. Fuller, daughter of Joseph L. Fuller and Sarah R. Weaver, who is the grandaunt of my aunt Mary McStroul and her sister Anna McStroul, and the great-grandaunt of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams.

Pearl E. Cory died December 7, 1974 in Sonoma County, California at the age of 92.  She was the wife of Charles Gaunt, son of Lewis Cass Gaunt and Mary A. Kindlesparger, who is my 3rd cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

Morton Eli Perlman, son of Louis Perlman (originally Leizer Perlmutter) and Jennie Novitsky (originally Zlate Nowicki), died December 7, 1999 in Boca Raton, Palm Beach County, Florida at the age of 79.  He is my 1st cousin 2x removed on my Nowicki line.

Bernard Garfinkel, son of Eliezer Louis Garfinkel and Doba Ajzner, was born November 27, 1930 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.  He is my 2nd cousin 2x removed on my Meckler line through the Ajzners and my 3rd cousin 1x removed on my Meckler line through the Garfinkels..

Elvira Frazer was born November 27, 1931 in Port Norris, Cumberland County, New Jersey.  She is the wife of Paul M. Brainin, son of David Harry Brainin and Rebecca Harbour, who is my 1st cousin 2x removed on my Brainin line.

Ken Garfinkel, son of Israel Garfinkel and Marsha Gerb, was born November 27, 1949 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.  He is also (see above) my 3rd cousin 1x removed on my Meckler line through the Garfinkels.

Lois Suzanne Gauntt was born November 27, 1970.  She is my 2nd cousin.

Lisa Katherine Gaunt was born November 27, 1974.  She is my 6th cousin 1x removed.

Matthew Russell Ellis was born November 27, 1997.  He is my 2nd cousin 1x removed.

Aden Sharma was born November 27, 2006, I believe in Mumbai, India.  He is the grandnephew of my aunt Mary McStroul and the 1st cousin of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams.

Michael Leonard McStroul, son of Darwin Monroe McStroul and Rose Ruth Bloom, and Cathleen Constance Canty were married November 27, 1969 in San Diego, San Diego County, California.  Michael is the 1st cousin of my aunt Mary McStroul and the 1st cousin 1x removed of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams.

Bruce Philip Alexander, son of Phillip Charles Alexander and Jessie Ozley Easlick, and Marilyn W. Ramsey were married November 27, 1976 in Middlesex County, Connecticut.  Bruce is my 4th cousin 1x removed on my Gauntt line through the Easlicks.

Deaths

Ann Elizabeth Zelley, daughter of Ridgway Zelley and Rebecca Gaunt, died November 27, 1860, probably in Burlington County, New Jersey, at the age of 24.  She is my 2nd cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

William Jefferson Fuller, son of Joel C. Fuller and Rachel, died November 27, 1902, probably in Thurman, Warren County, New York, at the age of about 52.  He is the 1st cousin 3x removed of my aunt Mary McStroul and the 1st cousin 4x removed of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams on their Fuller line.

Mirta Mata died November 27, 2004, probably in Broward County, Florida, at the age of 68.  She was the first wife of Max Socherman, son of William Socherman (originally Welwel Szocherman) and Anna Tania Jakowszycka, who is my 4th cousin on my Nowicki line through the Szochermans (and to whom I might also be related through the Jakowszyckas, but I'm still working on that).

Harry Mark Gaunt, Jr., son of Harry Mark Gaunt and Sarah Gayle Kirkendall, died November 27, 2009 in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana at the age of 85.  He is my 5th cousin 1x removed via the Gaunts.

Vera Vanaman, daughter of Charles Milton Vanaman and Julia Ann Gaunt, was born November 21, 1916 in Quinton, Salem County, New Jersey.  She is my half 2nd cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

Walter Scott Haines was born November 21, 1917 in Masonville, Burlington County, New Jersey.  He is the husband of Mildred Marian Gauntt, daughter of Mark Lewallen Gaunt, Jr. and May Ethyl Lake, who is my 4th cousin 1x removed on my Gauntt line.

John Kushner, son of Myrim Kushner and Chaye Golubchik, was born November 21, 1935 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.  He is my 3rd cousin 1x removed on my Meckler line through the Golubchiks.

Georgina Corene Ellis was born November 21, 1977.  She is my 2nd cousin 1x removed.

Edward C. Ogden and Anna Elizabeth Gaunt, daughter of George Horner Gaunt and Emily A. Miller, were married November 21, 1893 in New Jersey, possibly in Gloucester County.  Anna is my 4th cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

Lucy Marian Fuller, daughter of Lyman Fuller and Eliza, died November 21, 1891, probably in Stony Creek, Warren County, New York, at the age of about 52.  She is the great-great-grandaunt of my aunt Mary McStroul and the 3x-great-grandaunt of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams on their Fuller line.

Dora Kirtlan, daughter of Homer Astwood Kirtlan and Elizabeth H. Gaunt, died November 21, 1933 in Peru, Miami County, Indiana at the age of 60.  She is my 3rd cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

William Alvin Gaunt, son of James Knox Polk Gaunt and Sarah Naomi Boone, died November 21, 1952 in Kings County, California at the age of 73.  He is my 3rd cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

Maud Elizabeth Gaunt, daughter of Jacob B. Gaunt and Sarah C. Plume, died November 21, 1978 in Mendocino County, California, possibly in Ukiah, at the age of 84.  She is my half 3rd cousin 1x removed via the Gaunts.

Mary Udashkin died November 18, 1983 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada at the age of 67.  She was the wife of Louis Kardash, son of Dovid Kardish and Etta Gorodetsky, who is my 1st cousin 2x removed on my Gorodetsky line.

Elizabeth Almira Heath, daughter of Don Howard Heath and Hattie Lorena Fuller, died November 18, 2000 in Prescott, Yavapai County, Arizona at the age of 89.  She is the mother of my aunt Mary Edith McStroul.

Bessie Leone Scifert died November 18, 2010 in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina at the age of 91.  She is the wife of Roscoe Freeman Hutson, son of Earl Morris Hutson and Catherine Corenne Utley, who is my 6th cousin 1x removed on my Gauntt line through the Hutsons.

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun: How Many Surnames in Your Family Tree Database?

We're looking at information in our family tree programs this week for Saturday Night Genealogy Fun!

Your mission, should you decide to accept it (cue the Mission:  Impossible! music here) is to:

 

1.  Go into your genealogy management program (GMP; either software on your computer or an online family tree) and figure out how to count how many surnames you have in your family tree database.

2.  Tell us which GMP you're using and how you did this task.

3.  Tell us how many surnames are in your database and, if possible, which surname has the most entries.  If this excites you, tell us which surnames are in the top 5!  Or 10!!  Or 20!!!

4.  Write about it in your own blog post, in a comment to this blog post, in a status or comment on Facebook, or in a Google Plus Stream post.

NOTE:  If you can't figure out how to do this in your GMP, use the Help button in your program and search for "count surnames", then follow directions.

Let's see how I do.

I am currently using Family Tree Maker 2019.  I couldn't figure out how to find the surnames easily, so I did look under Help.  "Count" got me nowhere.  "Surnames" led me to information about the "Surname Report", which "lists the total number of individuals with a specific surname, the number of males and females with that surname, and the earliest and most recent year a surname appears in your tree."

I remembered that reports are under the "Publish" menu.  It took me a couple of attempts to figure out which submenu the Surname Report fell under — "Person Reports."  I generated a report which was really short and discovered that for some reason the default was for surnames of extended family only.  When I clicked on "All Individuals" it generated a new report that is 51 pages long instead of merely half a page.  I then told it to sort by surname count:  "List the surnames by order of most occurrences in the tree file."

I couln't find how many total surnames are in the report for All Individuals without counting manually, which is kind of annoying.  That doesn't seem to be one of the statistics that FTM provides.  My rough count is 4,868.

I can say that the report shows I have a total of 10,114 individuals in my database, of which 5,144 are male and 4,953 are female.  I added 5,144 and 4,953 and got 10,097, which is a difference of 17 people.  Since one of the variables is to limit the counts only to included individuals ("Only count surnames of individuals who are included in the report."), and that's turned on, I can't explain who these 17 people are.  Maybe they're people for whom I have some sort of information but haven't entered any name?  I would have thought I had way more than 17 people like that in my tree.

Instead of the top 10 or 20, I took a screenshot of my report showing surnames with at least 30 individuals in my database.

One of the names is "Unknown", with 42 occurrences.  I just looked in the database, and yes, I have 42 instances where I have entered "Unknown" as someone's name.

I was not surprised to see that the top three names are Gaunt, Sellers, and Gauntt.  Between them, Gaunt and Gauntt, which are spelling variants of the same name, total 841.  Gantt, much further down the list with 37, is another spelling variation.  That's my paternal grandmother's family, which I've done a fair amount of research on during the past couple of years.  Sellers is 574, not really a close second.

I was kind of surprised to see that the fourth-most common name was Allen, which had 143 individuals.  That's a branch of my Gaunt/Gauntt/Gantt line.

The highest number for a line on my mother's side of the family is Garfinkel, at 45.  That is not an ancestral line but a collateral one.  I have met several cousins from the Garfinkel branch of my family.  The highest number for an ancestral line is Gordon, at 44, but I don't think all of them are from my mother's family.  That family name was originally Gorodetsky, and immigrating family members changed it to Gordon after coming to the United States.  I believe I have some Gordons in my tree who are not connected to the Gorodetskys.

It is amusing to note that several surnames which are extended family have higher counts than the ones from my mother's family.  The most is Fuller, at 104.  The Fullers are one of my aunt's ancestral lines, going back to early upstate New York.

Unlike Randy, I see no need to retype the information that appears quite nicely in my graphic.

Daniel Schiffer/Schifferer, son of Alexander Schiffer/Schifferer, was born October 30, 1765, probably in Prussia.  He is the 3x-great-grandfather of my aunt Mary McStroul and her sister Jean McStroul and the 4x-great-grandfather of my 1st cousin Todd Meckler and my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams.

Jacob C. Thackeray, son of Ezra Thackeray and Phoebe Cramer, was born October 30, 1829 in New Jersey, possibly in Cumberland County.  He is my 3rd cousin 4x removed on my Gauntt line through the Thackerays.

Brinton Jerome Gaunt, son of John W. Gaunt and Elizabeth McLaughlin, was born October 30, 1861 in Stark County, Ohio.  He is my 3rd cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

William E. Gaunt, son of Ner Gaunt and Elizabeth C. Miller, was born October 30, 1872 in Jay County, Indiana.  He is also my 3rd cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

Margaret Katherine Winstel was born October 30, 1881 in Kentucky, probably close to Cincinnati, Ohio.  She was the wife of Clayton Emmert Gage, son of James W. Gage and Mary Rosella Hutson, who is my 4th cousin 2x removed on my Gaunt line via the Hutsons.

David Wise Gaunt, son of Arthur Lee Gaunt and Rachel Lavinia Stutsman, was born October 30, 1883 in Jay County, Indiana.  He is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

Hila Jewel Allen, daughter of Clifford F. Allen and Florence Hendrickson, was born October 30, 1934 in New Jersey, probably in Burlington County.  She is my 5th cousin on my Gauntt line through the Allens.

Clarence Gilbert Lore, son of Clarence Newcomb Lore and Dorothy Mae Sellers, was born October 30, 1946 in Salem, Salem County, New Jersey.  He is my half 1st cousin on my Sellers line.

Giselle Socherman, daughter of Max Socherman (originally Szocherman) and Mirta Mata, was born October 30, 1955 in Cuba, probably in Habana.  She is my 4th cousin 1x removed on my Nowicki line through the Szochermans.

Events in My Family Tree: October 14

Hattie Fuller is the niece of Anna Fuller, which means that she and Don Heath were married on the 13th anniversary of Hattie's auntr's death.  I realize this type of anniversary has shown up before in my events lists, but I still think of it as kind of creepy.  But maybe this was a common thing a hundred years ago?  Was it done in honor of the deceased?  Or did people not pay attention to these types of anniversaries then?

Leo David Hannon was born October 14, 1895 in Tiffin, Seneca County, Ohio.  He was the second husband of Hazel Pearl Gaunt, daughter of Ross B. Gaunt and Mary Ann Dale, who is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

Murray Lederman, son of Gabriel William Lederman and Anna Gordon (originally Chantse Gorodetsky), was born October 14, 1939 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.  He is my 1st cousin 2x removed on my Gorodetsky line.
