Significant Anniversaries of 2025

I haven't written about the milestones in my family tree for the past couple of years, but as I try to get back to a regular posting schedule, it's one of the topics I wanted to bring back.  I find it interesting to look at what happened years ago in my family (obviously, or I wouldn't be doing genealogy!), and I like to make sure these people and events are remembered.

200 Years Ago

In January 1825, my 3x-great-grandfather Abel A. Lippincott, son of Stacy B. Lippincott and Alice Parker, was born in New Jersey.  Because New Jersey is the real Quaker state, and because you can't go anywhere in New Jersey without tripping over lots of Lippincotts, I still don't have Abel's complete birth date or where in New Jersey he was born, because Lippincotts are just bloody hard to research.  I wish I could spend a month or two at the New Jersey State Archives and do some in-person research to sort all this out.  And if wishes were horses . . . .

150 Years Ago

Henry Heath, the great-great-grandfather of my aunt Mary McStroul and her sister Anna McStroul and the 3x-great-grandfather of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams, died December 2, 1875 in Thurman, Warren County, New York.  He was originally from Surrey, England, born roughly between 1816 and 1819 in Haslemere, although I still need to nail that down.  He immigrated to the United States around 1838 and married Eliza Bullock in 1844 in Argyle, Washington County, New York.  I have names for his parents and grandparents but little information beyond that.  More research I need to catch up on!

100 Years Ago

My aunt Dorothy "Dottie" Mae Sellers, daughter of Bertram Lynn Sellers and Elizabeth Leatherberry Sundermier, was born October 29, 1925 in Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey.  Technically Dottie was my half-aunt, because she was a child of my grandfather's first marriage.  Grampa was still married to Elizabeth while he and my grandmother were living together and my father came along.  (My father had no full siblings but had seven half-siblings, three from his mother and four from his father.)  I met Dottie when I was about 11 or 12 and then stayed in touch with her the rest of her life, through my moves and hers.  She lived to be 95 years old.  I'm still looking for the son she surrendered for adoption in 1945.

My great-great-grandfather Victor Gordon, originally Avigdor Gershovich Gorodetsky, died January 26, 1925 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.  He immigrated to the United States from the Russian Empire in 1914, bringing his two youngest sons with him but leaving his second wife behind (I was told by cousins that she did not want to come).  He lived long enough to see his second-youngest daughter (of eight children) get married, on December 31, 1924, for which occasion a wonderful oversized family photograph with about three dozen people in it was made.  I have a two-piece photocopy of the photograph; I'm working on getting it scanned and tiled so I can share it.

Henry Crawford, son of Wallace Crawford and Louisa, died April 25, 1925 in Upatoi, Muscogee County, Georgia at the age of about 69.  He is the great-great-grandfather of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams on her father's side.  Henry was Black and born enslaved.  In 1917 he and four family members sued Standard Oil for gross negligence for having misrepresented an explosive for kerosene lamp oil.  Standard Oil settled out of court and they received payment for damages.

75 Years Ago

Richard Wesley Preuss, son of Richard Preuss and Donna Potter, was born March 14, 1950 in Missoula, Missoula County, Montana.  He is my stepfather.  He married my mother December 19, 1977 in Villa Tasso, Walton County, Florida, a small unincorporated community which might have had a grand total of about 200 people living in it.  He used to be a paint and body man, and I learned a great appreciation for car bodywork because of him (although I still don't know why he painted my father's Chevelle BFY).

50 Years Ago

This is one of those years when there was a significant birth, marriage, and death.

In 2021 I wrote about my first cousin Andy Meckler turning 50.  This time around, it's his brother, Todd Meckler, who turns 50.  They're the cousins I knew the most growing up, and it makes me feel really old to know that both of them will have hit the half-century mark.

Also on my mother's side of the family, her 1st cousin Yedida Marcia Amine, daughter of Moshe S. Amine and Florence Meckler, married Richard J. Merrill on December 24, 1975 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California.  Aviva was born exactly one year after my mother, on Armistice Day, so they had a special connection.

The other notable event of 1975 for my family was the death of my grandfather's brother, George Moore "Dickie" Sellers, on March 26.  One day Grampa was out of town, and when I asked why, my mother told me that his brother had died.  To which my stunned reaction was, "Grampa has a brother?"  It was the first I had heard of him.  Several years later I met their youngest sister, Betty, who told me that his nickname Dickie came from the Dickie Do Flicker.  When I Google that, however, nothing comes up.  When I get no results from Google, I tend to think something is wrong.  Maybe it was an inside family joke.

Events in My Family Tree: December 12

The fact that my great-great-grandfather Gershon Novitsky died in 1948, rather than three weeks later in 1949, meant that I was able to obtain a copy of his death certificate much more easily.

John Timothy Heath, son of Henry Heath and Eliza Bullock, was born December 12, 1855 in Thurman, Warren County, New York.  He is the great-grandfather of my aunt Mary McStroul and her sister Anna McStroul and the great-great-grandfather of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams.

Rinaldo Wise Gaunt, son of David Wise Gaunt and Margaret A. Williams, was born December 12, 1902 in Jay County, Indiana.  He is my 5th cousin 1x removed via the Gaunts.

David Maxwell Votaw, son of Joseph Willet Votaw and Florence E. Barnett, was born December 12, 1906 in Indiana, possibly in Wabash County.  He is my 4th cousin 2x removed on my Gauntt line through the Votaws.

Mary Udashkin was born December 12, 1915 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.  She was the wife of Louis Kardash, son of Dovid Kardish and Etta Gorodetsky, who is my 1st cousin 2x removed on my Gorodetsky line.

Frank James Zelley, son of Wilmer Egee Zelley and Emma Pearl Lambert, was born December 12, 1917 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah.  He is my 4th cousin 1x removed on my Gauntt line through the Zelleys.

Bernadette Allen, daughter of Raymond Charles Allen and Elizabeth Ray, was born December 12, 1954, probably in New Jersey.  She is my 5th cousin 1x removed on my Gauntt line through the Allens.

Brandon Mark Horn was born December 12, 1980.  He is my 5th cousin 2x removed.

Marriage

Jay Charles Dubell, son of Charles Barton Dubell and Myrtle Lydle Allen, and Jan Galey were married December 12, 1970 in New Jersey.  Jay is my 5th cousin 1x removed on my Gauntt line through the Allens.

Deaths

Gershon Itzhak Novitsky (originally Nowicki), son of Abraham Yaakov Nowicki and Sirke, died December 12, 1948 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York at the age of about 90.  He is my great-great-grandfather.

Dustin Tryce Lore died December 12, 2010.  He is my half 1st cousin 1x removed.

Irwin Millstein got married on his 1st cousin Florence (Bernstein) Cohen's third wedding anniversary.  Their mothers were sisters.

Francis Monroe Warner, son of Wilbert Rose Warner and Rachel Anna Armstrong, was born December 10, 1908 in Burlington County, New Jersey.  He is my 1st cousin 3x removed on my Armstrong line.

Gretchen K. C. Hopman was born December 10, 1916, possibly in Indiana.  She was married to Burman J. Gaunt, son of Orlan Fay Gaunt and Ruth Irene Waybright, who is my 5th cousin 1x removed via the Gaunts.

David Kardash, son of Louis Kardash and May Udashkin, was born December 10, 1947 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.  He is my 2nd cousin 1x removed on my Gorodetsky line through the Kardashes.

Michael Albert Ellis, son of Albert Giberson Ellis and Eva Imogene Calvert, was born December 10, 1960 in Georgia.  He is my 2nd cousin on my Gauntt line through the Ellises.

Dean Frederick Allen was born December 10, 1979.  He is my 5th cousin 2x removed.

Claire Hannah Lynne Zindler was born December 10, 1996.  She is my 4th cousin 1x removed.

Seymour H. Cohen and Florence Bernstein, daughter of Sam Bernstein and Rose Gordon (originally Ruchel Gorodetskaya), were married December 10, 1946 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.  Florence is my 1st cousin 2x removed on my Gorodetsky line.

Irwin Millstein, son of Nathan Millstein and Sarah Gordon (originally Sura Gorodetskaya), were married December 10, 1949 in Bronx, Bronx County, New York.  Irwin is also my 1st cousin 2x removed on my Gorodetsky line.

Robert Melvin Vaughn, son of Melville Everett Vaughn and Evelyn Virginia Ballenger Fadler, and Vicki Norton were married December 10, 1982 in Lemoore, Kings County, California.  Robert is my 5th cousin 1x removed on my Gauntt line through the Vaughns.

Don Hervak and Leala Rona Birnboim, daughter of Chaim Avraham Birnboim and Shirley Hirt, were married December 10, 2006 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.  Leala is my 4th cousin on my Meckler line through the Birnboims.

Deaths

Lydia A. died December 10, 1879 in Chambersburg, Mercer County, New Jersey at the age of 33.  She was the wife of Joseph Bowker, son of John Bowker and Louisa J. Armstrong, who is my 1st cousin 4x removed on my Armstrong line.

Jonathan Easlick died December 10, 1905 in Morrisville, Pennsylvania at the age of 63.  He was married to Susannah Sever, daughter of Allen Sever and Elizabeth Ann Gaunt, who is my 1st cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

Vinton Thompson Easlick, son of Allen Severs Easlick and Mary E. Shemeley, died December 10, 1968 in Mount Holly, Burlington County, New Jersey at the age of 67.  He is my 3rd cousin 1x removed on my Gauntt line through the Easlicks.

Elaine Fensterwald died December 10, 1979 in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota at the age of 47.  She was married to Julian Saul Perlman, son of Abraham Sam Perlman (originally Perlmutter) and Stella Jaffe.  He is my 3rd cousin 1x removed on my Nowicki line through the Perlmutters.

Abraham Meckler, son of Morris Mackler (originally Moishe Meckler) and Minnie (originally Mushe) Zelda Nowicki, died December 10, 1989 in Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, Florida at the age of 77.  He is my grandfather.

Russell Oliver Ellis, son of Levi Ellis and Carrie Florence Gauntt, died December 10, 1991 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania at the age of 69.  He is my 1st cousin 1x removed on my Gauntt line.

Irwin Garfield (originally Garfinkel), son of Jack Garfinkel and Martha Freedman, died December 10, 1998 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada at the age of 69.  He is my 3rd cousin 1x removed on my Meckler line through the Garfinkels.

Don Leo McStroul, son of Eugene Washington McStroul and Elizabeth Almira Heath, was born December 2, 1942.  He is the brother of my aunt Mary McStroul and the uncle of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams.

Elizabeth Lavin was born December 2, 1966.  She is the half 2nd cousin of my half-sister Laurie Sellers.

Christopher Patrick Lore was born December 2, 1975.  He is my half 1st cousin 1x removed.

Shirley June Gaunt, daughter of Walter Everett Gaunt and Norma Marguerite Prusso, died December 2, 1980 in Alameda County, California at the age of 55.  She is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

Martha Nora Martin died December 2, 1988 in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana at the age of 85.  She was the wife of Chauncey P. Gaunt, son of Arthur Lee Gaunt and Rachel Lavinia Stutsman, who is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

William August Heath, son of Henry Heath and Eliza Bullock, died November 28, 1938, probably in Warren County, New York.  He is the great-granduncle of my aunt Mary McStroul and the great-great-granduncle of my not-quite-cousiin Angela Williams on their Heath line.

Don Howard Heath, son of John Timothy Heath and Mary Etta Smith, died November 28, 1959 in Warrensburg, Warren County, New York.  He is the grandfather of my aunt Mary McStroul and the great-grandfather of my not-quite-cousiin Angela Williams.

Viola Votaw, daughter of Daniel W. Votaw and Louisa Gaunt, died November 24, 1925 in Wabash County, Indiana at the age of 50.  She is my 3rd cousin 3x removed on my Gauntt line through the Votaws.

Lulu Harris, daughter of Robert Miller Harris and Blanche Gaunt, died November 24, 1959 in Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana at the age of 65.  She is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

Ida Mekler, daughter of Eliezer Mekler and Esther Baila, died November 24, 1959 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada at the age of about 75.  She is my 1st cousin 3x removed via the Meklers.

Orville James Gage, son of James W. Gage and Mary Rosella Hutson, died November 24, 1975 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio at the age of 78.  He is my 5th cousin 2x removed on my Gauntt line through the Hutsons.

William Hymell Kelley, son of Joseph Kelley and Martha W. Lawrence, died November 24, 2006, possibly in Seminole, Pinellas County, Florida, at the age of 80.  He is the 2nd cousin 1x removed of my 1st cousin Albert Lore on his Eckman line through the Lawrences.

Alma Adams, daughter of Harry Adams and Mary Julie McClain, died November 18, 1872 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio at the age of about 78.  She is the great-grandmother of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams.

Harry Gerald Sherron, son of Albert W. Sherron and Eveline Stokes Githens, died November 18, 1927 in Salem County, New Jersey at the age of 76.  He is my 3rd cousin 3x removed on my Gauntt line through the Githenses.

Mary Udashkin died November 18, 1983 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada at the age of 67.  She was the wife of Louis Kardash, son of Dovid Kardish and Etta Gorodetsky, who is my 1st cousin 2x removed on my Gorodetsky line.

Elizabeth Almira Heath, daughter of Don Howard Heath and Hattie Lorena Fuller, died November 18, 2000 in Prescott, Yavapai County, Arizona at the age of 89.  She is the mother of my aunt Mary Edith McStroul.

Bessie Leone Scifert died November 18, 2010 in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina at the age of 91.  She is the wife of Roscoe Freeman Hutson, son of Earl Morris Hutson and Catherine Corenne Utley, who is my 6th cousin 1x removed on my Gauntt line through the Hutsons.

So Joseph Gaunt died on his sister-in-law Sarah's 57th birthday, but he was in Jay County, Indiana, while I believe Sarah (who was alraedy widowed) was in Wabash County, therefore probably not affecting any possible birthday celebration that might have been taking place.

Elizabeth Ann Gaunt, daughter of Hananiah Selah Gaunt and Abigail Atkinson, was born November 8, 1828 in New Jersey, possibly in Burlington County.  She is my great-great-grandaunt.

Martha L. Gaunt, daughter of Redden N. Gaunt and Pauline E. Smoot/Smuck, was born November 8, 1848 in Indiana, possibly in Jay County.  She is my 3rd cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

Harley Heath, son of William Augusta Heath and Mary Codner, was born November 8, 1880 in Thurman, Warren County, New York.  He is the 1st cousin 2x removed of my aunt Mary McStroul and her sister Jean McStroul and the 1st cousin 3x removed of my 1st cousin Todd Meckler and my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams.

Hattie Fuller is the niece of Anna Fuller, which means that she and Don Heath were married on the 13th anniversary of Hattie's auntr's death.  I realize this type of anniversary has shown up before in my events lists, but I still think of it as kind of creepy.  But maybe this was a common thing a hundred years ago?  Was it done in honor of the deceased?  Or did people not pay attention to these types of anniversaries then?

Russell Roberts Allen, son of George N. Allen and Ada E. Mason, was born September 16, 1896 in Bordentown, Burlington County, New Jersey.  He is my 4th cousin once removed on my Gauntt line through the Allens.

Anna Marie Gauntt, daughter of Thomas Franklin Gauntt and Anna Marie Stayton, was born September 16, 1943 in New Jersey, almost definitely in Burlington County.  She is my 1st cousin once removed on my Gauntt line.

Richard Wayne Gaunt, son of Jack Lowell Gaunt and Rosemary Ann Trindade, was born September 16, 1954 in Maryland.  He is my 5th cousin once removed via the Gaunts.

Michael S. Budwick was born September 16, 1966.  He is almost definitely my cousin, although I haven't figured out the connection yet.

Linda K. Wickham was born September 16, 1990.  She is the 3rd cousin once removed of my half-sister Laura Sellers.

Harley Heath, son of William Augusta Heath and Mary Codner, and Agnes Ruth Fell were married September 16, 1913 in Fort Ann, Washington County, New York.  Harley is the 1st cousin 2x removed of my aunt Mary McStroul and 1st cousin 3x removed of my cousin Todd Meckler on their Heath line.

Death

Joseph J. Claycomb, son of George F. Claycomb and Hannah Holmes Gaunt, died September 16, 1904 in Jay County, Indiana at the age of 61.  He is my 3rd cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

Lillian May Hoyer, daughter of Rollin Henry Hoyer and Bessie Florence Schwier, was born September 15, 1912 in Ripley County, Indiana.  She is my 6th cousin once removed via the Schwiers.

Nellie Heath, daughter of Harley Heath and Agnes Ruth Fell, was born September 15, 1914 in New York.  She is the 2nd cousin once remoed of my aunt Mary McStroul on her Heath line.

John McKay Appleton, son of Cheser Lewis Appleton, Jr. and Ruth Carrie Stradling, was born September 15, 1944 in Mount Holly, Burlington County, New Jersey.  He is my half 1st cousin on my Gauntt line via the Stradlings.

Albert Thomas Mills and Opal Edna Gage, daughter of James W. Gage and Mary Rosella Hutson, were married September 15, 1927 in Hamilton County, Ohio.  Opal is my 5th cousin 2x removed on my Gauntt line via the Hutsons.

Darrell Paul Gaunt, son of Edward Lee Gaunt and Ethyl Fay Davison, and Glendora Nelson were married September 15, 1940 in Allen County, Indiana.  Darrell is my 5th cousin once removed via the Gaunts.

Almaretta Claycomb, daughter of George F. Claycomb and Hannah Holmes Gaunt, died September 15, 1858 in Jay County, Indiana at the age of 9.  She is my 3rd cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

Amber Jeanette Williams died September 15, 2015, probably in Ohio, at the age of 21.  She is the daughter of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams, and we miss her every day.
