Yom HaShoah: May Their Memory Be for a Blessing

Yom HaShoah is the annual day of remembrance commemorating the deaths of the approximately 6 million Jewish victims of the Holocaust during World War II.  It falls on 27 Nisan of the Jewish calendar, which measures days from sunset to sunset.  If 27 Nisan falls adjacent to Saturday, the Jewish Sabbath, the observation is shifted one day forward or back.  This year 27 Nisan falls on a Friday, so Yom HaShoah has been moved one day earlier, beginning at sunset today, April 23, and ending at sunset on April 24.

The following is the list of my family members I believe died in the Holocaust.  They are all are from the Mekler/Nowicki branch of my family and lived in what was Grodno gubernia in the Russian Empire (mostly now in Belarus).  I repeat their names every year so that they may not be forgotten.  May their memory be for a blessing.

Roy Birnboim, son of Menashe Birnboim and Sophie Garfinkel, and Ronna Silverberg were married December 27, 1966 in Winnipeg, Manibota, Canada.  Roy is my 3rd cousin 1x removed on my Meckler line through the Garfinkels.

Deaths

Pauline E. Smoot died December 27, 1867 in Indiana at the age of 40.  She was married to Redden N. Gaunt, son of Joseph Gaunt and Phoebe Emily Severn, who is my 2nd cousin 4x removed via the Gaunts.

Floyd Richard Williams, son of Floyd Richard Williams and Susie Lee Adams, died December 27, 2001 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio.  He is the father of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams.

Lucy Marian Fuller, daughter of Lyman Fuller and Eliza, died November 21, 1891, probably in Stony Creek, Warren County, New York, at the age of about 52.  She is the great-great-grandaunt of my aunt Mary McStroul and the 3x-great-grandaunt of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams on their Fuller line.

Dora Kirtlan, daughter of Homer Astwood Kirtlan and Elizabeth H. Gaunt, died November 21, 1933 in Peru, Miami County, Indiana at the age of 60.  She is my 3rd cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

William Alvin Gaunt, son of James Knox Polk Gaunt and Sarah Naomi Boone, died November 21, 1952 in Kings County, California at the age of 73.  He is my 3rd cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

Maud Elizabeth Gaunt, daughter of Jacob B. Gaunt and Sarah C. Plume, died November 21, 1978 in Mendocino County, California, possibly in Ukiah, at the age of 84.  She is my half 3rd cousin 1x removed via the Gaunts.

Jessie Naomi Gaunt, daughter of William Alvin Gaunt and Mamie B. Mitchell, died October 23, 1992 in Calaveras County, California.  She is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

Four of the five marriages for today are for the Jewish side of my family, which is a far higher percentage than usual.  That is because the number 18 is considdered lucky in Jewish tradition.  What's interesting, however, is that two of the weddings appear to be a double wedding, which is bad luck in Jewish superstitions.

Benjamin Furman and Sarah Meckler, daughter of Morris Mackler and Minnie Zelda Nowicki, were married September 5, 1920 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.  Sarah is my grandaunt.

Julius Minuk and Esther Golub, daughter of Harry Golub (originally Golubchik) and Dora Sorin, were married September 5, 1954 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.  Esther is my 3rd cousin once removed on my Meckler line via the Golubchiks.

Ike Marc Pollack, son of Murray Harold Pollack and Ruth Claire Ergas, and Kendra Ahlquist were married September 5, 1999 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California.  Ike is my 2nd cousin once removed on my Brainin line through the Pollacks.

John Calhoun Caldwell died September 5, 1956, probably in Indiana, at the age of 61.  He was the husband of Treva Louise Gaunt, daughter of Charles Lee Gaunt and Bertha Wilson, who is my 5th cousin once removed via the Gaunts.

Sarah Alice Gaunt, daughter of William Alvin Gaunt and Pearl McGinnis, died September 5, 1988 in Alameda County, California at the age of 85.  She is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

Laura Jane Gaunt, daughter of Chauncey P. Gaunt and Martha Nora Martin, died September 5, 1996 in West Chester, Chester County, Pennsylvania.  She is yet another 5th cousin once removed via the Gaunts.

Frederick Dunstan was my great-grandmother's brother.  While I was writing about his marriage for this post, I realized that even though he lived in the same area as my grandmother and father, neither one of them ever mentioned him when they talked about family.  It's too late to ask them now, of course, but I wonder if he and my great-grandmother didn't get along.

Clifford Ellsworth Hutson, Jr., son of Clifford Ellsworth Hutson, Sr. and Alta Ada Gipson, died July 7, 1945 in San Diego County, California at the age of 20.  He is my 6th cousin once removed on my Gauntt line through the Hutsons.

John Robert Benham was born June 26, 1922 in Benham, Ripley County, Indiana.  He was the husband of Bessie Marie Hoyer, daughter of Rollin Henry Hoyer and Bessie Floreen Schwier, who is my 6th cousin once removed on my Gauntt line through the Schwiers.

Bessie Marie Hoyer, whose husband John's birthday was detailed above, was born June 26, 1925, exactly three years after her husband, also in Ripley County, Indiana, but in Batesville.   And she's still my 6th cousin once removed.

Stuart Howard Hanner, son of Clifford W. Hanner, Jr. and Sarah Alice Gaunt, was also born June 26, 1925, albeit in Stanislaus County, California.  He is my 5th cousin once removed via the Gaunts.

Jean Margo was born June 26, 1937, possibly in New Jersey.  She was the wife of Henry William Hudson, son of Harry J. Hudson and Irene Elizabeth Allen, who is my 5th cousin on my Gauntt line through the Allens.

Harry Golub, son of Yechail Golubchik and Peshe Mekler, and Dora Sorin were married June 26, 1932 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.  Harry is my 2nd cousin 2x removed via the Meklers.

Death

Bertha May Garron died June 26, 1935, possibly in New Jersey, at the age of 46.  She was the wife of Clifford Benjamin Gauntt, son of Isaiah/Isaac Allen Gauntt and Louisa Lemonyon, who is my half 2nd cousin 2x removed on my Gauntt line.

Yom HaShoah: Commemorating My Lost Family Members

The annual day of rememberance to remember Jewish victims of the Holocaust during World War II is called Yom HaShoah.  It falls on 27 Nisan on the Jewish calendar, which measures days from sunset to sunet.  This year on the Christian calendar it began at sunset on April 8 and will end at sunset on April 9.

The following is the list of my family members I believe to have died in the Holocaust.  All of them are from my Mekler/Nowicki family and lived in what was Grodna gubernia in the Russian Empire (now in Belarus).  May their memory be for a blesisng.

John Holsinger and Elizabeth Mack, daughter of William Mack and Agnes Gantz, were married on May 2, 1797, possibly in Bedford County, Pennsylvania.  Elizabeth is my 1st cousin 6x removed.

George B. Replogle and Polly Mack, daughter of William Mack and Agnes Gantz, were married on May 2, 1835, also possibly in Bedford County, Pennsylvania.  Polly married on her sister's anniversary, and since she is Elizabeth's sister , she is also my 1st cousin 6x removed.

Deaths

Walter Everet Votaw, son of Daniel W. Votaw and Louisa Gaunt, died May 2, 1874 at the age of 8 months in Wabash County, Indiana.  He is my 3rd cousin 3x removed on my Gauntt line through the Votaws.

Elizabeth Mack, daughter of Alexander Mack and Catherine Baker, died May 2, 1881 at the age of 82, probably in Stark County, Ohio.  She is my 3rd cousin 5x removed.

Joe Gordon, son of Victor Gordon (originally Gorodetsky) and Esther Leah Schneiderman, died May 2, 1955 at the age of about 62 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.  He is my maternal great-grandfather.

Isaac Pollack died May 2, 1969 at the age of about 77, probably in New York.  He was married to Bessie Brainin, daughter of Morris Brainin and Rose Dorothy Jaffe, who is my great-grandaunt.

Wilma E. Norris died May 2, 2004 at the age of 91 in San Diego, San Diego County, California.  She was married to Neil Gaunt Clark, son of Oren Wilson Clark and Anna G. Gaunt, who is my 4th cousin 2x removed.

Ethel Nowicki, daughter of Zelig Nowicki and Zlate, died February 28, 1952 at the age of about 84 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.  She is my 1st cousin 3x removed.
