Significant Anniversaries of 2025

I haven't written about the milestones in my family tree for the past couple of years, but as I try to get back to a regular posting schedule, it's one of the topics I wanted to bring back.  I find it interesting to look at what happened years ago in my family (obviously, or I wouldn't be doing genealogy!), and I like to make sure these people and events are remembered.

200 Years Ago

In January 1825, my 3x-great-grandfather Abel A. Lippincott, son of Stacy B. Lippincott and Alice Parker, was born in New Jersey.  Because New Jersey is the real Quaker state, and because you can't go anywhere in New Jersey without tripping over lots of Lippincotts, I still don't have Abel's complete birth date or where in New Jersey he was born, because Lippincotts are just bloody hard to research.  I wish I could spend a month or two at the New Jersey State Archives and do some in-person research to sort all this out.  And if wishes were horses . . . .

150 Years Ago

Henry Heath, the great-great-grandfather of my aunt Mary McStroul and her sister Anna McStroul and the 3x-great-grandfather of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams, died December 2, 1875 in Thurman, Warren County, New York.  He was originally from Surrey, England, born roughly between 1816 and 1819 in Haslemere, although I still need to nail that down.  He immigrated to the United States around 1838 and married Eliza Bullock in 1844 in Argyle, Washington County, New York.  I have names for his parents and grandparents but little information beyond that.  More research I need to catch up on!

100 Years Ago

My aunt Dorothy "Dottie" Mae Sellers, daughter of Bertram Lynn Sellers and Elizabeth Leatherberry Sundermier, was born October 29, 1925 in Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey.  Technically Dottie was my half-aunt, because she was a child of my grandfather's first marriage.  Grampa was still married to Elizabeth while he and my grandmother were living together and my father came along.  (My father had no full siblings but had seven half-siblings, three from his mother and four from his father.)  I met Dottie when I was about 11 or 12 and then stayed in touch with her the rest of her life, through my moves and hers.  She lived to be 95 years old.  I'm still looking for the son she surrendered for adoption in 1945.

My great-great-grandfather Victor Gordon, originally Avigdor Gershovich Gorodetsky, died January 26, 1925 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.  He immigrated to the United States from the Russian Empire in 1914, bringing his two youngest sons with him but leaving his second wife behind (I was told by cousins that she did not want to come).  He lived long enough to see his second-youngest daughter (of eight children) get married, on December 31, 1924, for which occasion a wonderful oversized family photograph with about three dozen people in it was made.  I have a two-piece photocopy of the photograph; I'm working on getting it scanned and tiled so I can share it.

Henry Crawford, son of Wallace Crawford and Louisa, died April 25, 1925 in Upatoi, Muscogee County, Georgia at the age of about 69.  He is the great-great-grandfather of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams on her father's side.  Henry was Black and born enslaved.  In 1917 he and four family members sued Standard Oil for gross negligence for having misrepresented an explosive for kerosene lamp oil.  Standard Oil settled out of court and they received payment for damages.

75 Years Ago

Richard Wesley Preuss, son of Richard Preuss and Donna Potter, was born March 14, 1950 in Missoula, Missoula County, Montana.  He is my stepfather.  He married my mother December 19, 1977 in Villa Tasso, Walton County, Florida, a small unincorporated community which might have had a grand total of about 200 people living in it.  He used to be a paint and body man, and I learned a great appreciation for car bodywork because of him (although I still don't know why he painted my father's Chevelle BFY).

50 Years Ago

This is one of those years when there was a significant birth, marriage, and death.

In 2021 I wrote about my first cousin Andy Meckler turning 50.  This time around, it's his brother, Todd Meckler, who turns 50.  They're the cousins I knew the most growing up, and it makes me feel really old to know that both of them will have hit the half-century mark.

Also on my mother's side of the family, her 1st cousin Yedida Marcia Amine, daughter of Moshe S. Amine and Florence Meckler, married Richard J. Merrill on December 24, 1975 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California.  Aviva was born exactly one year after my mother, on Armistice Day, so they had a special connection.

The other notable event of 1975 for my family was the death of my grandfather's brother, George Moore "Dickie" Sellers, on March 26.  One day Grampa was out of town, and when I asked why, my mother told me that his brother had died.  To which my stunned reaction was, "Grampa has a brother?"  It was the first I had heard of him.  Several years later I met their youngest sister, Betty, who told me that his nickname Dickie came from the Dickie Do Flicker.  When I Google that, however, nothing comes up.  When I get no results from Google, I tend to think something is wrong.  Maybe it was an inside family joke.

Events in My Family Tree: December 25

I've heard from friends that being a Christmas baby is mostly a disadvantage, because you often don't have a regular birthday party and people want to give you a combined birthday/Christmas present.  This is probably not a big problem when you're Jewish, right?

Mary Ann McGowan was born December 25, 1805 in Pennsylvania.  She was married to Joseph Gantt, son of Joseph Gaunt and Mary A. Lobaugh, who is my 1st cousin 5x removed via the Gaunts.

Pauline E. Smoot was born December 25, 1827 in Virginia.  She was married to Redden N. Gaunt, son of Joseph Gaunt and Phoebe Emily Severn, who is my 2nd cousin 4x removed via the Gaunts.

Wilma Elizabeth Norris was born December 25, 1912 in Orestes, Madison County, Indiana.  She was married to Neil Gaunt Clark, son of Oren Wilson Clark and Anna G. Gaunt, who is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

Irene Bassie (Bessai?) Dubensky was born December 25, 1920, possibly in Ohio.  She was the third wife of Harry Herman Mackler, son of Morris Mackler (originally Moishe Meckler) and Minnie (originally Mushe) Zelda Nowicki, who is my granduncle.

Gene Paul Gaunt, son of Clarence Meridith Gaunt and Mary Grace Stewart, was born December 25, 1931 in California.  He is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

Melanie Amron, daughter of Eli Morton Amron and Alice Gold, was born December 25, 1952 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.  She is my 4th cousin on my Nowicki line through the Amrons.

Edward James Ellis, Jr. was born December 25, 1977.  He is my 2nd cousin 1x removed.

Marriages

Nathan Gaunt, son of Samuel Gaunt and Achsah Taylor, and Sarah Coles were married December 25, 1823 in Swedesboro, Gloucester County, New Jersey.  Nathan is my 2nd cousin 5x removed via the Gaunts.

Richard Dunstan, son of James Dunstan and Maria Hilton, and Jane Coleclough were married December 25, 1833 in Manchester, Lancashire, England.  They are my 3x-great-grandparents.

James Andrews and Mary D. Gaunt, daughter of Hananiah Selah Gaunt and Mary Elizabeth Rose, were married December 25, 1841 in Tuckerton, Burlington County, New Jersey.  Mary is my half 2nd-great-grandaunt.

Francis D. Matthews and Susannah H. Gaunt, another daughter of Hananiah Selah Gaunt and Mary Elizabeth Rose, were married December 25, 1876, probably in New Jersey.  Susannah is also my half 2nd-great-grandaunt.

Floyd Richard Williams, son of Preston Frank Williams and Priscilla Crawford, and Susie Lee Adams, daughter of Alma Adams, were married December 25, 1927 in Muscogee County, Georgia.  They are the paternal grandparents of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams.

Deaths

Isaac Gaunt, son of Hananiah Gaunt and Rebecca Mulliner, died December 25, 1864 in Tuckerton, Burlington County, New Jersey at the age of 77.  He is my 3rd-great-granduncle.

James H. Fuller, son of Joseph E. Fuller and Lorina G. Tripp, died December 25, 1929 in Stony Creek, Warren County, New York at the age of 80.  He is the 2nd-great-granduncle of my aunt Mary McStroul and her sister Anna McStroul, and the 3rd-great-granduncle of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams.

Janet Edna Weaver, daughter of James Henry Weaver and Ada Adelle Allen, died December 25, 2005, possibly in Whiting, Ocean County, New Jersey, at the age of 75.  She is my 5th cousin on my Gauntt line through the Allens.

Joseph W. Bonifas, son of Charles Dennison Bonifas, Sr. and Georgia Grace Gaunt, died December 25, 2011 in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana at the age of 80.  He is my 6th cousin via the Gaunts.

Caroline Estella Oler was born December 13, 1882 in Indiana.  She was married to James Edward Slentz, son of Ephraim Slentz and Zilpha Emily Gaunt, who is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

Sam Brozovsky was born December 13, 1926 in Ottawa, Ontario Canada.  He was the husband of Ann Kardish, daughter of Dovid Kardish and Etta Gorodetsky, who is my 1st cousin 2x removed on my Gorodetsky line.

Nathanial Barker, son of Walter Barker and Carrie Bell Crawford, was born December 13, 1938 in Georgia, probably Muscogee County.  He is the 1st cousin 3x removed of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams on her Crawford line.

Rhoda Brozovsky, daughter of Sam Brozovsky and Ann Kardish, was born December 13, 1954 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.  She is my 2nd cousin 1x removed on my Gorodetsky line through the Kardishes.

Alexis Ann Omichinski was born December 13, 1982.  She is my 4th cousin 1x removed.

Ian Elliot Kardish Levitan was born December 13, 1990.  He is my 3rd cousin.

Marriage

James Pharo, son of Gervais Farrow and Elizabeth Hawkesmore, and Ann Murfin, daughter of Robert Murfin, were married December 13, 1673 in Bawtry, Yorkshire, England.  They are my 8th-great-grandparents.

Deaths

Earl Morris Hutson, son of Bateman Hutson and Lorinda Brown, died December 13, 1947 in Brookston, White County, Indiana at the age of 57.  He is my 5th cousin 2x removed on my Gauntt line through the Hutsons.

Anna Tania Jakowsczyka, daughter of Aaron Samuel Jakowsczyk and Findla Nowinska (probably Nowicka), died December 13, 1980 in Miami Beach, Dade County, Florida at the age of about 73.  She is probably related to me herself (possibly as a 1st cousin 3x removed), but she was the wife of William Socherman (originally Welwel Szocherman), son of Chanania Szocherman and Rojzla Perlmutter, who is my 2nd cousin 2x removed on my Nowicki line through the Perlmutters.

Sarah Clarice Higgins, daughter of Ervie Oscar Higgins and Elizabeth Opal Gaunt, died December 13, 2007 in California, possibly in Butte or Yuba County.  She is my 5th cousin 1x removed via the Gaunts.

This is a good day for extended family research.  My aunt is mentioned twice, my half-sister twice, and my not-quite-cousin three times.

Henry Ward Beecher Hutson, son of Bateman Hutson and Lorinda Brown, was born December 2, 1893 in Brookston, White County, Indiana.  He is my 5th cousin 2x removed on my Gauntt line through the Hutsons.

Don Leo McStroul, son of Eugene Washington McStroul and Elizabeth Almira Heath, was born December 2, 1942.  He is the brother of my aunt Mary McStroul and the uncle of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams.

Elizabeth Lavin was born December 2, 1966.  She is the half 2nd cousin of my half-sister Laurie Sellers.

Christopher Patrick Lore was born December 2, 1975.  He is my half 1st cousin 1x removed.

James Marek was born December 2, 1990.  He is the 3rd cousin 1x removed of my half-sister Laurie Sellers.

Mozell Crawford, daughter of Henry Crawford, Jr. and Channy Mariah King, died December 2, 1977 in Albany, Dougherty County, Georgia at the age of about 68.  She is the 1st cousin 2x removed of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams on her Crawford line.

Shirley June Gaunt, daughter of Walter Everett Gaunt and Norma Marguerite Prusso, died December 2, 1980 in Alameda County, California at the age of 55.  She is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

Martha Nora Martin died December 2, 1988 in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana at the age of 85.  She was the wife of Chauncey P. Gaunt, son of Arthur Lee Gaunt and Rachel Lavinia Stutsman, who is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

Three children of Walter Clayton Gaunt and Lulu May Sherman are on today's list of events.  One had a birthday on November 12, one had a husband whose birthday was November 12 (and coincidentally who also had the surname Sherman), and one had a husband who died on November 12.

Jenepher Hlynn Ellis was born November 12, 1968.  She is my 2nd cousin 1x removed.

Tracey Jean Myers was also born November 12, 1968.  She is my 5th cousin 2x removed.

Gina Randall was born November 12, 1983.  She is my 3rd cousin 1x removed.

Aytch M. Johnson and Carolyn Ann Clark, daughter of Neil Gaunt Clark and Wilma E. Norris, were married November 12, 1983 in San Diego County, California.  Carolyn is my 5th cousin 1x removed on my Gauntt line through the Clarks.

Mark Russell Sellers and Sandra Nicole Farrier were married November 12, 2011.  Mark is my baby brother.

Mary Ann Claycomb, daughter of George F. Claycomb and Hannah Holmes Gaunt, died November 12, 1895 in Noble County, Indiana at the age of 36.  She is my 3rd cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

Jennie May Snellings, daughter of Doma Snellings and Alice Crawford, died November 12, 1930 in Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia at the age of 25.  She is the 1st cousin 2x removed of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams on her Crawford line.

Frederick Dunstan, son of Frederick Cleworth Dunstan and Martha Winn, died November 12, 1932 in Mount Holly, Burlington County, New Jersey at the age of 64.  He is my great-granduncle.

Edward Harry Gauntt, son of Mark Lewallen Gauntt, Jr. and May Ethyl Lake, died November 12, 2001, possibly in Riverton, Burlington County, New Jersey, at the age of 81.  He is my 4th cousin 1x removed on my Gauntt line.

William Allen Gaunt, son of Calvert Gaunt and Annette Pearson, was also born November 10, 1898 but in Wabash County, Indiana.  He is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

Iris Dawn Gaunt, daughter of Lewis Allen Gaunt and Opal Esther Westrick, was born November 10, 1925 in Roanoke, Huntington County, Indiana.  She is my 4th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

Faye Garfinkel, daughter of Morris Garfinkel and Mirka Ajzner, was born November 10, 1928 in Verigin, Saskatchewan, Canada.  She is my 3rd cousin 1x removed on my Mekler line through the Garfinkels and the sister of my very dear cousin Esther Garfinkel.

Irvin Weinstein was born November 10, 1933 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.  He was the beloved husband of Esther Garfinkel, daughter of Morris Garfinkel and Mirka Ajzner, who is my very dear 3rd cousin 1x removed on my Mekler line through the Garfinkels.

David Lester Gaunt, son of Irving Lester Gaunt and Mildred Hoffman Childs, was born November 10, 1935 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.  He is my 5th cousin via the Gaunts.

Coleen Gayle Rogers, daughter of Stanley C. Rogers and Shirley June Gaunt, was born November 10, 1951 in Alameda County, California.  She is my 5th cousin 1x removed via the Gaunts.

Erik Fiks was born November 10, 1954 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.  He was the husband of Gayle Malka Kushner, daughter of Benjamin Louis Kushner and Gladys Shindelman, who is my 4th cousin on my Mekler line through the Kushners.

Guy Edward Allen, son of Clarence Allen, Jr. and Grace L. Stagnato, and June Elizabeth Foldes were married November 10, 1973 in Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey.  Guy is my 5th cousin 1x removed on my Gauntt line through the Allens.

Deaths

Jefferson Crawford, son of Henry Crawford, Jr. and Channy Mariah King, died November 10, 1978 in Muscogee County, Georgia at the age of 66.  He is the 1st cousin 2x removed of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams on her Crawford line.

Billie Brainin, daughter of David Harry Brainin and Rebecca Harbor, died November 10, 1992 in Vineland, Cumberland County, New Jersey at the age of 63.  She is my 1st cousin 2x removed on my Brainin line.

Alice Mullin died November 10, 1996 in Volusia County, Florida at the age of 89.  She was the wife of John Francis Gaynor, Jr., son of John Francis Gaynor and Josephine O'Connor, who is the granduncle of my half-sister Laura Sellers.

Louisa L. Gaunt, daughter of Reuben Lewallen Gaunt and Jane Weatherby, was born November 4, 1850 in Washington Township, Burlington County, New Jersey.  She is my 2nd cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

Susan Linda Gauntt, daughter of Irving Lester Gauntt and Mildred Hoffman Childs, was born November 4, 1942 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.  She is my 5th cousin on my Gauntt line.

Russell S. Behr was born November 4, 1963.  He is my 6th cousin.

Jonathan Oren Clark was born November 4, 1984.  He is also my 6th cousin.

Nirel Irving Gershwind was born November 4, 2000.  He is my 3rd cousin 1x removed.

Marriages

William Szocherman and Tania Jakowszycka, daughter of Aaron Samuel Jakowszycki and Findl Nobinska/Novinska?, were married November 4, 1934 in Guanabacoa, Habana, Cuba.  Tania is probably my 2nd cousin 2x removed on my Nowicki line.

William Schneiderman, son of Joseph Schneiderman and Mollie Bernstein, and Mary were married November 4, 1991.  Bill is my 2nd cousin 2x removed on my Schneiderman line.

Deaths

Robert King died November 4, 1954 in Upatoi, Muscogee County, Georgia at the age of about 67.  He was the second husband of Priscilla Crawford, daughter of Henry Crawford and America Brooks, who is the great-grandmother of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams.

Jane Lochrie died November 4, 1995 in Millbury, Worcester County, Massachusetts at the age of 91.  She was the wife of Charles E. Wickham, son of Charles E. Wickham and Martha Elizabeth Bowen, who is the 1st cousin 2x removed of my half-sister Laura Sellers on her Bowen line.

Thomas Kirkland Gauntt died on the 50th birthday of his sister Mary Louise Gauntt.  Considering his checkered history, she may not have been surprised.

Emma T. Tonkin, daughter of George C. Tonkin and Mary B. Gaunt, was born October 31, 1884 in Gloucester County, New Jersey.  She is my 5th cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

Mary Louise Gauntt, daughter of Thomas Kirkland Gauntt and Jane Dunstan, was born October 31, 1899 in Mount Laurel, Burlington County, New Jersey.  She is my grandaunt.

Jerald Lee Brainin, son of Samuel Michael Brainin and Blanche Mildred Sax, was born October 31, 1947 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.  He is my 2nd cousin 1x removed on my Brainin line.

Tracy Allen Cunningham was born October 31, 1960 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana.  He is the husband of Sandra Lee Dunn, daughter of Harold Edwin Dunn, Jr. and Ruth Clara Ellis, who is my 2nd cousin on my Gauntt line via the Ellises.

Yizhak Zvi Kamil was born October 31, 1995.  He is my 3rd cousin.

Javier Moreno was also born October 31, 1995.  He is my 4th cousin 2x removed.

Marriage

Paul Bresge and Rosanne Baker were married October 31, 1991.  Rosanne is my 3rd cousin 1x removed.

Deaths

Benjamin Selah Gaunt, son of Hananiah Selah Gaunt and Mary Elizabeth Rose, died October 31, 1901 in Vincentown, Burlington County, New Jersey at the age of 79.  He is my half great-great-granduncle.

James Kirkland Gauntt, son of Thomas Kirkland Gauntt and Jane Dunstan, died October 31, 1949 in Fern Park, Seminole County, Florida at the age of 44.  He is my granduncle.

Carrie Bell Crawford, daughter of Henry Crawford and America Brooks, died October 31, 1979 in Muscogee County, Georgia at the age of 77.  She is the great-grandaunt of my not-quite-cousin Angela Williams.

Events in My Family Tree: October 29

None of my family events happened on October 29, 1929, commonly known as Black Tuesday and the beginning of the Great Depression.  At least so far as I have learned.

Lawrence Everett Hutson, son of Earl Morris Hutson and Catherine Corenne Utley, was born October 29, 1914 in Brookston, White County, Indiana.  He is my 6th cousin 1x removed on my Gauntt line through the Hutsons.

Marriage

Michael A. Pollard and Susan Renee Bonifas, daughter of Joseph W. Bonifas and Delores Gilbert, were married August 17, 1990 in Cannelton, Perry County, Indiana.  Susan is my 6th cousin once removed on my Gauntt line through the Bonifases.

Deaths

Edward F. Gaunt, son of Benjamin Gaunt and Mary Elizabeth Sever, died August 17, 1877 in New Jersey, probably iin Burlington County at the age of 3 days.  He is my half 2nd cousin 2x removed via the Gaunts.

Adeline Votaw, daughter of Daniel W. Votaw and Louisa Gaunt, died August 17, 1883 in Wabash County, Indiana two days after her twin sister, at the age of 29 weeks, 5 days.  She is my 3rd cousin 3x removed via the Gaunts.

Daniel Dunstan, son of Frederick Cleworth Dunstan and Mary Emma Richardson, died August 17, 1937 in Mount Holly, Burlington County, New Jersey at the age of 3.  He is my 2nd cousin once removed on my Dunstan line.

Zelig Garber died August 17, 1949 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada at the age of about 77.  He was the husband of Ida Mekler, daughter of Eliezer Mekler and Esther Baila, who is my 1st cousin 3x removed via the Meklers.

Monroe Crowell died August 17, 1975, probably in Indiana, at the age of 66.  He was the husband of Lillian May Hoyer, daughter of Rollin Henry Hoyer and Bessie Floreen Schwier, who is my 6th cousin once removed on my Gauntt line via the Schwiers.
