Saturday Night Genealogy Fun: Your Favorite Photo of Your Father

Yes, I'm a few days late on this, but I've been a little off schedule the past few months and am now trying to get back into the swing of things.  I figure a few days late is better than not at all, right?

So Randy Seaver chose this topic for the recent Saturday Night Genealogy Fun because it was the day before Father's Day:

Here is your assignment if you choose to play along (cue the Mission:  Impossible! music, please!):

(1) It's Father's Day in the USA on Sunday, so let's talk about our fathers.

(2) Show us your favorite photograph of your father — the one that shows him in the best light possible.  Describe the occasion, the setting, and the people in the photograph.

(3) Tell us about it in your own blog post, in a comment on this post, or in a Facebook post.

This is hands down my favorite photo of my father.  He looks so adorable in his suit and hat!

Looking at the photo, it appears to be a mother and two children, right?  Nothing that straightforward with my family!  The people in the photo are my father, Lynn Sellers; his oldest half-sister, Ruth (Stradling) Appleton (the only other surviving child that my grandmother bore); and Ruth's daughter, Ruth Anne Appleton.  Although there was only a difference of less than six years between them, my father was Ruth Anne's uncle.

My estimate for the year of the photo is about 1943.  My father looks to be about 7 years old or so, and Ruth Anne looks about 2.  They're all dressed up, and Ruth Anne is wearing a bonnet, so I think it's Easter.  I really need to ask Ruth Anne about that to find out if I'm right.  Ruth isn't so dressed up, so I don't know if she was going to church with them or not (assuming my guess about Easter is correct).

I know the setting has to be in New Jersey, but I don't know where.  I guess that's something else I should ask Ruth Anne.  Maybe she will recognize the house behind them.

Events in My Family Tree: January 22

Woo hoo!  I'm almost caught up.  I'm not sure why, but what I noticed about this list of events was the divorces.  My Aunt Ruth was married three times, as my nephew Joel has been.  I've often wondered if my family runs higher than average for divorce; in four generations of Sellerses I once counted twenty divorces.

Events in My Family Tree: January 1

For the new year I thought I would become better acquainted with the individuals in my family tree database by following the vital events in their lives on the calendar.  Every day I plan to post the births, marriages, and deaths that fell on that day.  As I am doing research for (very) extended family members, not everyone in my database is actually related to me.

I have already discovered that finding this information directly in Family Tree Maker, my primary family tree program, does not work well.  The first results for a search for "January 1" or "1 January" are years with no months or dates.  I looked at the index of names, which shows birth and death dates, but there's apparently no way to export that information.  So I saved a GEDCOM file and imported it to Reunion.  The latter gives much better results than FTM but still isn't perfect — it returns those people with the correct month, but it doesn't seem to be able to also find the specific date.  No matter, it's a vast improvement.

Jacob Longanecker, son of Daniel Longanecker and Sarah Mack, was born January 1, 1811, probably in Pennsylvania.  He is my 3rd cousin 5x removed on my Sellers line through the Macks.

William Kester Allen, son of Cyrus Kunze Allen and Clara Barton Shinn, was born January 1, 1908 in New Jersey, probably in Bordentown, Burlington County.  He is my 4th cousin once removed on my Gauntt line through the Allens.

I have been told that Baby Boy Gordon, son of Joe Gordon and Sarah Libby Brainin, was born January 1, 1915 in Manhattan, the first child of my maternal great-grandparents.

Kathleen Lynn Allen was born January 1, 1955 and is my 5th cousin once removed.

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun: What Ancestor Had the Most Children?

It's Saturday night, and time for more genealogy fun with Randy Seaver!  This week we're mining details from our family tree programs:

For this week's mission (should you decide to accept it), I challenge you:

(1) The Family History Hound listed 20 Questions about Your Ancestor, and I'm going to use some of them in the next few months.

(2) Please answer the question "What ancestor had the most children?  How many?"

(3) Write your own blog post, make a comment on this post, or post your answer on Facebook or Google+.  Please leave a link to your answer in comments on this post.

The most children I have entered for any couple in my database is ten.  I found two couples with ten children.  The first couple I am listing are my great-grandparents.

Jane and Thomas Gauntt, c. 1940's
Thomas Kirkland Gauntt, born May 23, 1870 in Fairview, Burlington County, New Jersey; died January 21, 1951 in Mt. Holly, Burlington County, New Jersey.  He was the son of James Gauntt and Amelia Gibson.  He married Jane Dunstan September 2, 1891, probably in Burlington County, New Jersey.

Jane Dunstan, born April 28, 1871 in Manchester, Lancashire, England; died August 1, 1954 in Mt. Holly, Burlington County, New Jersey.  She was the daughter of Thomas Cleworth Dunstan and Maria Winn.

The children of Thomas Kirkland Gauntt and Jane Dunstan are:

1.  Frederick Cleworth Gauntt, born January 7, 1892 in Rancocas, Burlington County, New Jersey; died March 17, 1910 in Rancocas, Burlington County, New Jersey.

2.  Anna Gauntt, born January 14, 1893 in Westhampton Township, Burlington County, New Jersey; died January 19, 1986 in Lindstrom, Chisago County, Minnesota.  She married Charles Cooper Stradling on November 3, 1913 in Masonville, Burlington County, New Jersey.

3.  Bertha Gauntt, born June 14, 1895 in Camden, Camden County, New Jersey; died before June 27, 1900, probably in New Jersey.

4.  Carrie Florence Gauntt, born September 9, 1896 in Rancocas, Burlington County, New Jersey; died April 19, 1985 in Burlington, Burlington County, New Jersey.  She married Levi Ellis on July 29, 1914 in Mt. Holly, Burlington County, New Jersey.

7.  James Kirkland Gauntt, born August 7, 1905 in Masonville, Burlington County, New Jersey; died October 31, 1949 in Fern Park, Seminole County, Florida.  He married Katherine Boyle in 1932 in West Virginia.

8.  Thomas Franklin Gauntt, born July 14, 1908 in Masonville, Burlington County, New Jersey; died December 4, 1991 in Sarasota County, Florida.  He married Anna Marie Stayton on July 12, 1935 in New Jersey.

The second couple are the great-grandparents of Jane Dunstan and therefore my 4th-great-grandparents.  I don't have as much information about them and their children.

James Dunstan married Maria Hilton on June 6, 1811 in Manchester, Lancashire, England.

The children of James Dunstan and Maria Hilton are:

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun: How Many Ancestors Did You "Meet"?

Randy Seaver has another fun question for this week's Saturday Night Genealogy Fun:

Here is your assignment, if you choose to play along (cue the Mission:  Impossible music, please!):

1) Write down which of your ancestors that you have met in person (yes, even if you were too young to remember them).

2) Tell us their names, where they lived, and their relationship to you in a blog post, in comments to this post, or in comments on Facebook.

These are my ancestors whom I have met:

Myra Roslyn (Meckler) Sellers Preuss (1940–1995), my mother, lived in Brooklyn, New York; Miami, Florida; Los Angeles County, California; Sydney, New South Wales, Ausralia; Okaloosa County, Florida (two separate stints); Villa Tasso, Florida; and San Antonio, Texas (and possibly Chicago and Hawaii).  (She died in Okaloosa County.)

Bertram Lynn Sellers, Jr. (1935– ), my father, has lived in multiple locations in New Jersey; multiple locations in New York; Sanford, Florida; Miami, Florida; Los Angeles County, California; Sydney, New South Wales, Ausralia; Okaloosa County, Florida (two separate stints); Villa Tasso, Florida; Mossy Head, Florida; Cleveland, Ohio; and San Antonio, Texas.

Abraham Meckler (1912–1989), my maternal grandfather, lived in Brooklyn, New York; Miami, Florida; Las Vegas, Nevada; Margate, Florida; and I think Sunrise, Florida (until his death in one of the two latter locations).

Lillyan E. (Gordon) Meckler (1919–2006), my maternal grandmother, lived in Manhattan; Brooklyn, New York; Miami, Florida; Las Vegas, Nevada; Margate, Florida; Sunrise, Florida; and then in Carson City, Nevada until her death.

Sarah Libby (Brainin) Gordon (about 1890–1963), my great-grandmother (mother of Lillyan), lived in Kreuzburg, Russian Empire (now Krustpils, Latvia) and Manhattan, where she died.  I have no documentation that I met her, but my mother told me that she took me to Florida to meet her grandmother while I was still a babe in arms, and my father remembers the event also.

Bertram Lynn Sellers, Sr. (1903–1995), my paternal grandfather, lived in multiple locations in New Jersey; multiple locations in New York; and Okaloosa County, Florida (that I know of).  He died in Niceville, Okaloosa County.

Anna (Gauntt) Stradling (1893–1986), my paternal grandmother, lived in multiple locations in New Jersey; multiple locations in New York; Sanford, Florida; Jacksonville, Florida; maybe somewhere else in Florida?; and Chisago City, Minnesota, where she died.  (And likely more places I don't know about.)

Laura May (Armstrong) Sellers Ireland (1882–1970), my great-grandmother (mother of Bertram Sr.), died eight years after I was born, but I never met her.  The rest of my ancestors died well before I was born.

So I have met only seven of my ancestors, one fewer than Randy, and one of those I have no recollection or proof of.  And Randy thought eight was a low number!

Father's Day: Siblings and Children

This year for Father's Day I wanted to show a photograph of my father with his father, but I ran into a problem very quickly:  I don't have any.  I don't know if that was accidental or deliberate, but with all the photos I have, not a single one shows my father and grandfather together.  Admittedly, my grandfather was apparently the semiofficial photographer for the Sellers family, because he is in very few photos himself, maybe only half a dozen.  But it still seems a little odd.

What I do have, however, are photos of my father with his sister (half-sister, actually) from his mother, with all three sisters (half-sisters) from his father, and with all four of his children.

Randy Seaver's Saturday Night Genealogy Fun: A Favorite Family Photograph

Randy's challenge this week for Saturday Night Genealogy Fun was to post a favorite family photograph and tell about who is in it:

1)  Show us one of your favorite photographs of your family - a group, yourself, your mom, your dad, your sibling(s), your grandparents, etc.  Tell us about it - the date, the event, the setting, the persons in the photograph.

I'm only a few hours late!  But this was an easy choice for me, especially with the inspiration of Randy's four-generation photo.

This is one of the few five-generation photos I have for my family.

Date:  Probably 1982, because the baby was born in March 1982.

Event:  Just the fact that five generations were together was probably enough, but maybe also to celebrate the new baby.

Setting:  I don't know, but probably my cousin's or my aunt's home.  (I need to ask my cousin!)

Persons, left to right:

Anna Gauntt Stradling (1893–1986), my paternal grandmother, mother of Ruth Stradling Appleton

Ruth Carrie Stradling Appleton (1914–1984), my father's oldest half-sister and my aunt, mother of Ruth Anne Appleton

Forrest Ronald Appleton, my first cousin once removed, father of Forrest Ronald Appleton II

Ruth Anne Appleton, my first cousin, mother of Forrest Ronald Appleton

Forrest Ronald Appleton II, my first cousin twice removed

Now that I've noted all the years, I realized that this photo is even more special, because only two years later my aunt passed away, followed two years after that by my grandmother.  I'm glad they took this photo when they did!

Special Discovery in an Unexpected Place

The many books available from Arcadia Publishing are easy to overlook as sources of real family history information.  Arcadia is essentially a vanity press publishing house, where you provide a fully laid-out book that Arcadia then prints and distributes.  From what I have heard, authors are paid a flat fee.  They must adhere to specific production requirements that fit a formula -- set number of pages; maximum number of words in the introduction, per caption, overall.  The books rely primarily on older, copyright-free photos so that no royalties have to be paid.  No index is permitted.  Arcadia doesn't provide any editing; whatever you submit is what goes into print.  The quality can vary quite a bit from book to book.

I learned about these books when I picked up one about St. Paul, Minnesota at a used book store.  Some cousins on my mother's side settled in St. Paul, and I thought maybe their names might be in the book.  At the store I looked at the back of the book and discovered it didn't have an index, but it was marked down and affordable, so I splurged.  I read through the entire book and didn't find any of my relatives' names.  I did, however, create a name index for the book and uploaded it to Rootsweb, so at least other people would have the benefit of a finding aid.

That said, it is possible to find surprising gems in the books.  I was recently sent a two-for-one offer with free shipping, so decided to look around and see if something caught my eye.  I bought books on Mount Holly, New Jersey, where my grandmother's family and my grandfather were from, and East Orange, New Jersey, where most of my half-sister's mother's family was located.  When the books arrived I paged through the Mount Holly one, reading the names in every caption, hoping to find one I recognized.  The most I was expecting was perhaps a photo of a building that was identified as having belonged to an ancestor.

In the caption of a 1929 photograph of the Mount Holly High School Dramatic Club, I saw my father's oldest sister's name.  I wasn't sure if it was her, because I had never seen any photos of her from that period, so I did a quick scan of her face and sent it to my cousin.  At first she wasn't sure either, and I learned that she didn't have any photographs of her mother from when she was young.  Apparently the family didn't have a lot of money to spend on luxuries.  But we figured out it really was her mother, and now she has a photo and some information about her mother from when she was in high school.  I guess that coupon was a good investment.
